62. Mel Blanc
By Mark Evanier. POV Online The great skill of Mel Blanc was as an actor It is one thing to affect a funny voice - quite another to mold a coherent, believable characterization with it and to wring every drop of humor out of every line.
http://povonline.com/cols/COL133.htm
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 4/25/97 When Mel Blanc passed away, the folks at Warner Brothers ran a touching double-truck color ad showing Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam and a few others, all with heads bowed and voices stilled. They, along with the Flintstones' Barney Rubble, were the most famous of his much publicized "thousand voices." He had to be good. When he wasn't doing cartoons, he was dashing from mike to mike in the studios that broadcast the top network comedy radio programs. Appearing on The Jack Benny Program, as Mel did for a couple of decades, was like playing second for the Yankees at their prime.
Over the years, I met him several times, never for a longer time than it takes to tell someone you've always loved their work. Finally though, in 1986, I needed to hire and (gulp!) direct him for a TV special I was producing. Our business folks went through a week of haggling, politely talking Mel's representative down from an initially ridiculous opening demand to a price that our budget could (barely) afford. The deal was finally made and I was informed that Mel was doing a Heathcliff recording session the next day, expected to wrap at around 2:00. To save him driving someplace just to record our few lines, we booked that studio for fifteen minutes after Mel's other session. I got there at 1:30, waited until the other actors left, and took over.

Cy Young on 80th Birthday in The Sporting News, April 9, 1947 The Sporting News The Sporting News Pitchers to Have Own MVP Awards in Future The Sporting News goes on to pat itself on the back for having the foresight to create its own special award for pitchers as early as 1948. Frick managed to get the owners to vote for the new award unanimously at the winter meetings at the Hotel Commodore on February 4. The voting method had yet to be decided as of going to press, though it was assumed the new awards would adapt the methods of either the MVP or Hall of Fame balloting. This article is another example of why I like The Sporting News Magazines present an more affordable alternative to collecting a sports legend like Cy Young, whose tobacco cards and earlier ephemera are rightly priced sky high. 70. Mel Allen
Biographical information from the Jewish Virtual Library.
http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/Allen.html
Mel Allen (Melvin Allen Israel)
One of the first great American sportscasters, Mel Allen was the "Voice of the New York Yankees" baseball team, from 1939 to 1964. In 1978, he and fellow sportscaster Red Barber were the first to be honored with the Ford Frick Award, Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame recognition for broadcasters. Allen was born on February 14, 1913, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was educated as a lawyer. He broadcast New York Giant baseball games from 1939 to 1943, 20 World Series, 24 All-Star baseball games, and a season of Cleveland Indians baseball games (1968); as well as 14 Rose Bowl games, two Orange Bowls, two Sugar Bowls, and countless other major sporting events. Allen was present for nearly every major Yankees' event from Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak (1941) to Roger Maris' record breaking 61 home runs (1961). It was Allen who introduced Lou Gehrig to a packed Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, preceding his historic: Today, I am the luckiest man in the world farewell; and in 1948, introduced a stricken Babe Ruth at his sad 1948 adieu. He dubbed DiMaggio Joltin' Joe, Tommy Henrich Old Reliable, and Phil Rizzuto The Scooter. His endearing signature phrase was: How about that! Allen came out of retirement in l978 to call the New York cable TV coverage of Yankee games (through 1985), and served as host of the long-running weekly television series: "This Week In Baseball", nearly until his death.

The Story of Mel, a Real Programmer
This was posted to USENET by its author, Ed Nather (utastro!nather), on May 21, 1983. A recent article devoted to the *macho* side of programming made the bald and unvarnished statement: This is one of hackerdom's great heroic epics, free verse or no. In a few spare images it captures more about the esthetics and psychology of hacking than all the scholarly volumes on the subject put together. [1992 postscript - the author writes: "The original submission to the net was not in free verse, nor any approximation to it - it was straight prose style, in non-justified paragraphs. In bouncing around the net it apparently got modified into the `free verse' form now popular. In other words, it got hacked on the net. That seems appropriate, somehow."]
