Throughout history, baseball has been in a number of positions to affect social change in dramatic ways. In 1947, baseball began something it would take years for the rest of the nation to catch up to integration. Jackie Robinson was born in 1919 in the rural South. Less than six months after Jackie's arrival, his father left the family never to return. Robinson's mother packed up her five children and moved to California in 1920. Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College where his athletic skills were showcased. He gained entrance into UCLA and became the first athlete to ever letter in four sports baseball, basketball, track and football. He also developed a reputation as unwilling to allow anyone to insult him or his race.

Born in Georgia in 1919, Jackie Robinson came into the world when small pox and the Spanish flu seemed to be most dominant in various regions. His family was a family of sharecroppers and his father deserted Jackie and the rest of his children. Jackie's mother raised them. Living in poverty, the gang life appealed to Robinson for a short period of time until a friend encouraged him to leave the petty-crime infested group. Jackie's older brother was an Olympic athlete and Robinson had the athletic ability evident too from a young age forward. He found that he was talented in various team sports. In 1938, Robinson played for a junior college and soon found local fame when he earned the coveted "Most Valuable Player" award. Jackie Robinson was a lieutenant in the United States Army in the early forties. An honorable discharge prevented him from active combat in World War II. His baseball career soon followed. Jackie Robinson became the first African-American baseball player in the Major Leagues. He would later be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. During his career, he was the member of six teams that went to the World Series.

    Baseball and Jackie Robinson
    Overview
2007 marks the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's rookie season for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When he stepped onto Ebbets field on April 15th, 1947, Robinson became the first African American in the twentieth century to play baseball in the major leagues breaking the "color line," a segregation practice dating to the nineteenth century. Jackie Robinson was an extremely talented multi-sport athlete and a courageous man who played an active role in civil rights. This presentation was created to commemorate his achievements and describe some aspects of the color line's development and the Negro Leagues. Materials that tell his story, and the history of baseball in general, are located throughout the Library of Congress. This web presentation was made possible by a generous gift from the Citigroup Foundation. TIMELINE Baseball, the Color Line, and Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson voted 15th-best athlete of century

Jackie changed face of sports
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
It's not often that the essence of a man, especially a complicated man, can be summed up in one sentence. But then again, there haven't been many people like Jackie Robinson. "A life is not important," he said, "except in the impact it has on other lives." Jackie Robinson led the way for generations of black athletes. By that standard, few people and no athlete this century has impacted more lives. Robinson lit the torch and passed it on to several generations of African-American athletes. While the Brooklyn Dodgers infielder didn't make a nation color blind, he at least made it more color friendly. And he accomplished this feat by going against his natural instincts. He was an aggressive man, outraged at injustice, and quick to stand up for his rights. He had the guts to say no when ordered to the back of the bus in the army, and was court-martialed for his courage. His instinct wasn't to turn the other cheek, but to face problems head on. He was more prone to fighting back than holding back. That's what Robinson had to do when Dodgers president Branch Rickey selected him to become the first African-American to play in the majors this century. Rickey wanted a man who could restrain himself from responding to the ugliness of the racial hatred that was certain to come.

Even those who didn’t follow sports realized, here’s a man trying to carry the load for the black people. If Jackie turned out to be some kind of ignorant person, it would have been detrimental to the race beyond baseball. –Leonard Morgan, former semipro baseball player.
