Ruth, Babe,
byname of GEORGE HERMAN RUTH (b. Feb. 6, 1895, Baltimore, Md., U.S.d. Aug. 16, 1948, New York, N.Y.), one of American professional baseball's most popular figures, long-time holder of a record of 60 home runs in a major-league season (1927). (In 1961 Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hit 61 home runs, a record for the 162-game baseball season; but because Maris hit only 59 in the first 154 games of the season, Ruth's record for his 154-game season may be said still to stand.) Babe Ruth's batting feats are the standard by which all other long-ball hitters are judged. His flamboyance fitted into, and to some extent set the pace of, the Roaring Twenties in the United States. Born into a poverty-stricken environment, the future "Sultan of Swat" first became interested in athletics while living at St. Mary's Industrial School, Baltimore. He began his professional career in 1914 with the Baltimore minor-league team and was sold later that season to the Boston Red Sox of the American League. In two World Series with the Red Sox (1916, 1918), he set the record of which he was most proud: pitching 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings (broken by Edward "Whitey" Ford in 1961). Ruth, who won 94 big-league games while losing only 46, was the best left-handed pitcher in the American League when, in 1918, he began to play the outfield because of his powerful hitting. In January 1920 he was sold to the New York Yankees for $125,000 and was an outfielder with that club through 1934.

A home run king and fan favorite, Ruth was the first in a line of iconic New York Yankee stars which included Lou Gehrig Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle . Ruth began his career as a pitcher but moved to the outfield, where he gained fame as a slugger. After the Boston Red Sox sold him to the Yankees in 1920, Ruth became the most famous athlete in America. Ruth's larger-than-life personality (including a prodigious fondness for food and drink) was a hit with fans, and Ruth is often credited with making baseball the dominant American sport of its time. Ruth retired in 1935; he held the single-season record for home runs (60) until fellow Yankee Roger Maris hit 61 in 1961, and the career record (714) until Hank Aaron passed him in 1974. In 1948, like
