TeamStore Ozzie Smith Smith is considered by many to be the greatest shortstop of all time. He played for 19 years, retiring after the 1996 season. Smith began his career in 1977 with the San Diego Padres and was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982. He holds five National League records, including the season record for fielding percentage (.987) and most years leading the league in fielding percentage (seven). Smith also holds numerous Major League records, including most assists in a season (621 in 1980), assists in a career (over 8,300) and double plays in a career (more than 1,560). Smith won a total of 13 consecutive gold gloves, the most by any shortstop in major league history, and was selected to play on the All-Star team 15 times. In 1994, Smith won the Branch Rickey Award, an award given to the player who personifies "service above self," and won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1995 for his work in the community. Ozzie Nelson ) was American entertainer who originated at starred in the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet radio and television series. He was born Oswald George Nelson on March 20 , 1906 in Jersey City, New Jersey . As a young man, he was the youngest person (at 13) to ever be awarded the Eagle Scout rank. He graduated from Rutgers University and entered law school. While in college, he played in a small band and coached football to earn money. But when faced with the depression, and music changed to a full time career. Ozzie started his entertainment career as a band leader. He formed and led the Ozzie Nelson Band , and had some limited success. He made his own 'big break' in . The New York Daily Mirror ran a poll of its readers to determine their favorite band. He knew that news vendors got credit from the newspaper for unsold copies by returned the front page. Gathering hundreds of discarded newspapers, the band filled out ballots in their favor. They edged out Paul Whitemnan and were pronounced the winners.

Ozzie retired from baseball in 1996 after playing 19 years in the major leagues, the first four years with the San Diego Padres and the final fifteen with the St. Louis Cardinals.
