Baseball's showman
By Nick Acocella
Special to ESPN.com
"Bill Veeck was born on the right side of the tracks. And as soon as he was capable, dragged himself to the other side," says Mike Veeck with a laugh about his father, the maverick Hall of Fame baseball owner, on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Just as he predicted, Bill Veeck, for all his accomplishments, is best remembered as the guy who sent a midget to the plate. And yet, Eddie Gaedel's lone major league appearance, while the most famous of Veeck's stunts, may not even have been his most bizarre. And it hardly ranks among his significant contributions to the game. Far more important were his innovations in the financial operations of his various franchises almost all of them initially deplored by other owners. In stints with the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox (twice) between 1946 and 1980, Veeck was the last person to purchase a major league team without an independent fortune. Born on Feb. 9, 1914, in Chicago, Veeck grew up in the suburb of Hinsdale. When Bill was four, his father, sportswriter William Veeck Sr., became president of the Chicago Cubs. By the time he was 11, Bill was working as a vendor, ticket seller and junior groundskeeper. When his father died in 1933, Veeck left Kenyon College to work for the Cubs, rising to club treasurer. In 1935, he married Eleanore Raymond.

Early life
Milwaukee Brewers
In 1941, Veeck left Chicago and purchased the American Association Milwaukee Brewers, in a partnership with former Cubs star and manager Charlie Grimm. This left him with a mere eleven dollars in his pocket. After winning three pennants in five years, Veeck sold his Milwaukee franchise in 1945 for a $275,000 profit. During this time, he put a stamp on Major League Baseball with his showmanship to attract a wider audience. During his tenure with the Brewers, he gave away live pigs, beer, cases of food; he put on fireworks displays, staged weddings at home plate, and played morning games for wartime swing shift workers en route to setting minor league attendance records. While many may have thought that these theatrics were simply for financial reasons, Veeck's sole purpose was to provide entertainment for the audience; many of them were produced unannounced.

Veeck, Bill,
byname of WILLIAM LOUIS VEECK (b. Feb. 9, 1914, Hinsdale, Ill., U.S.d. Jan. 2, 1986, Chicago, Ill.), American professional baseball club executive and owner, who introduced many innovations in promotion. Veeck grew up with baseball management. His father, a Chicago sportswriter, was president of the National League Chicago Cubs (1919-33), and young Veeck himself sold peanuts and scorecards at Wrigley Field during Cubs home games. He became treasurer for the Cubs in 1940; and in 1941, with Charley Grimm, a former player and manager of the Cubs, he bought the Milwaukee Brewers, then the name of a Cub minor-league property. They helped move the club from last place in 1941 to second place in 1942 and first place in 1943-45, while raising attendance to the highest level then known in the minor leagues. Improvement in team members was accompanied by a number of amusing promotional efforts. In 1946 Veeck headed a syndicate that bought the franchise of the American League Cleveland Indians, who had not won a pennant since 1920. In the first year, the Indians drew more than 1,000,000 fans for the first time. Veeck then hired Larry
