Jump to: navigation search Previous (Honorius I) Next (Hookworm) Honus Wagner in 1904. Johannes Peter Wagner (February 24, 1874 – December 6, 1955), nicknamed "Honus" and "The Flying Dutchman," is considered one of the greatest players in the history of major league baseball . One of the first true athletic stars of the twentieth century, Wagner began his career in 1897. From 1900 until he retired in 1917 he amassed more hits (2,967), extra-base hits (865), and runs (1,521) than any player to date. By his example both off and on the field, he won the respect and admiration of Americans at a time when many were deeply prejudiced against individuals of German backgrounds. Besides being a fearsome hitter, he was a skilled base stealer and expert fielder. Many analysts consider him the most accomplished, versatile shortstop in history. As one of just five inductees into the first class (1936) of the Baseball Hall of Fame, the debate continues as to whether Honus Wagner might be the best baseball player of all time.

Wagner, Honus,
byname of JOHN PETER WAGNER (b. Feb. 24, 1874, Mansfield [now Carnegie], Pa., U.S.d. Dec. 6, 1955, Carnegie), American professional baseball player, one of the first five men elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (1936). He was generally considered the greatest shortstop in baseball history and by some was regarded as the finest all-around player in the history of the National League. The "Flying Dutchman" played for the Louisville Colonels from 1897 through 1899 and for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1900 through 1917. While playing for Pittsburgh, he led the National League in batting average in eight seasons and in stolen bases five years. He finished his career with a 21-year batting average of .327 or .329 and 3,415 or 3,430 hits (authorities differ). His total of 252 three-base hits is the greatest ever attained by a National League player. He also retired with 722 stolen bases. A right-handed batter and thrower, Wagner had a heavy physique (about 6 feet, 200 pounds) and unusually long arms. He was, however, very fast as a base runner and as a defensive player. He managed the Pirates briefly in 1917 and, a popular figure in Pittsburgh, coached the team from 1933 to 1951. Related Propaedia Topics: Recreation, sports and games

John Peter "Honus" Wagner , "The Flying Dutchman," Charter member baseball's Hall of Fame, 1936. BORN: 24 February 1874. DIED: 6 December 1955. BURIED: "Saga" from the Bulletin Index 7 September 1939. The late John J. McGraw thought Honus Wagner was baseball's greatest player, and so thinks many another oldtimer today. Few years ago baseball scribes reverently passed bowlegged Pirate Wagner into baseball's Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N. Y., making him first, along with Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth, to cross the threshold of diamond immortals. Nor is Honus Wagner without honor in his own city. "Wagner Days" were common in 1902, 1903, 1909, years when the Flying Dutchman and the Pirates were bowling over the rest of the National League. There was a Wagner Day all over the circuit when he stepped out of active, major-league playing harness in 1917, and another day of kudos when he returned to the Pirates as a coach in 1932. Wagner Day this weekSaturdaymay or may not be the last to find Honus in active service. He is 65 and silver-haired now, and has made a living out of baseball for 50 years. John Peter Wagner, born in Carnegie (then Mansfield) of German extraction, played on sandlot teams as a youngster, along with his four brothersAlbert reached the majors, had a long professional career as a shortstopand first made a name for himself with St. Luke's in the Allegheny County League.
