Special to ESPN.com
Larry Bird, known as "a hick from French Lick," is anything but. He proved it as an overachieving basketball player, and he's proving it still as a successful, unassuming NBA coach. Bird was one of those rare athletes who made everybody around him better. His uncanny passing, deadly shooting and anticipation defensively transformed losers into winners. The 6-foot-9 forward overcame a severe case of what is referred to in the NBA as "white man's disease," an inability to jump high, to leap into the echelon of basketball greats. As a first-year head coach, Larry Bird found immediate success last season with the Indiana Pacers. In college, Bird carried lightly regarded Indiana State to the NCAA final. In the pros, he turned a 29-53 Boston Celtics team to a 61-21club as a rookie. He took the Celtics to three championships in the 1980s, bringing fans back to Boston Garden in the process. His duels with Magic Johnson were legendary. The two turned the NBA from a "minor" pro sport in 1980 into the big-time business it is today. The two combined to change a scoring game into a team game. "We weren't about stats," Magic said. "We were about winning."

Description
From the moment these two legendary players took the court on opposing sides, they engaged in a fierce physical and psychological battle. In Celtic green was Larry Bird, the hick from French Lick, with laser-beam focus, relentless determination, and a deadly jump shot, a player who demanded excellence from everyone around him and whose caustic wit left opponents quaking in their high-tops. Magic Johnson was Mr. Showtime, a magnetic personality with all the right moves. Young, indomitable, he was a pied piper in purple and gold. And he burned with an inextinguishable desire to win. Their uncommonly competitive relationship came to symbolize the most thrilling rivalry in the NBA—East vs. West, physical vs. finesse, old school vs. Showtime, even white vs. black. Each pushed the other to greatness, and together Bird and Johnson collected eight NBA Championships and six MVP awards, helping to save a floundering NBA. At the start they were bitter rivals, but along the way they became lifelong friends.

NBA Career statistics Other Resources Only 6 feet tall as a high school sophomore, Bird played guard for two years, then grew to 6-foot-4 and became a forward as a senior, averaging more than 30 points per game. He won a basketball scholarship to Indiana University in 1974 but left school after a month, went to a junior college for two months, then dropped out and returned home. In 1975, he was given a scholarship at Indiana State, but had to sit out a year to become eligible. After averaging more than 30 points a game for two years, he was drafted by the NBA's Boston Celtics in the first round of the 1978 draft because his original class had graduated. Bird opted to finish college. Now fully grown to 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, he averaged 28.6 points and 14.9 rebounds a game to lead Indiana State to an undefeated regular season and the NCAA tournament finals, where Michigan State, led by Earvin "Magic" Johnson, won the title. Bird was a consensus All-American and college player of the year. He then signed a five-year contract with the Celtics, reportedly for more than $3 million. Some critics doubted that he would be a professional star, because he lacked foot speed and jumping ability. However, with Bird averaging 21.3 points and 10.4 rebounds a game, Boston had the greatest turnaround in NBA history, going from a 29-53 record to 61-21 in 1979-80. Bird was named the league's rookie of the year.
