CLYDE DREXLER BIOGRAPHY
Clyde "The Glide" Drexler (born 2 June 1962 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a former NBA all-star guard.
He attended the University of Houston and was drafted 14th overall in the 1983 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He helped lead that team to the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992. In 1992 he served for the U.S. Olympic basketball team, nicknamed The Dream Team, and won a gold medal in the process. On February 14th, 1995, he was traded by the Blazers to the Houston Rockets, and helped lead them to their second consecutive NBA Championship later that year. In fact, if the Rockets hadn't made that trade they might very well have missed the playoffs entirely, because they were struggling to play .500 ball after an injury was suffered by their leader Hakeem Olajuwon. Feb. 20, 1963- Basketball player. Among the preeminent talents in the National Basketball Association is the outspoken forward of the Philadelphia 76ers, Charles Barkley, whose quick and aggressive play around the basket has placed him among the league's leading rebounders and scorers since the 1986-87 season. At six feet five inches tall, Barkley is the shortest player ever to lead the NBA in rebounding. The 250 pounds packed onto his relatively stubby frame helps Barkley to overpower taller players; never has a player so heavy been able to leap as high or dribble as skillfully. "Charles Barkley is unique with his body frame, with his structure, with his jumping ability," Pat Riley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and currently the head coach of the New York Knicks, explained to Jan Hubbard of New York News day (February 25, 1990). "The whole thing is unique, and that's why he is truly great." An extraordinarily intense competitor, Barkley plays every game as though it were his last. "A game for Charles is a passionate experience," Matt Guokas, Barkley's former head coach with the 76ers, told Mark Ribowsky for Inside Sports (June 1986). "I've never seen anyone so ferocious in wanting to prove he's better than his opponent." But Barkley's highly emotional nature and his frequently blunt comments to reporters have often made him the center of controversy.

NBA Career statistics A member of the famed "Phi Slamma Jamma" team at the University of Houston, the 6-foot-7, 222-pound Drexler averaged 14.4 points a game in his three-year career there. He left school after his junior to enter the NBA draft pool in 1983 and was chosen in the first round by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was a part-time player as a rookie and became a starting guard in his second season, 1984-85. Drexler suddenly blossomed as a scorer in 1987-88, when he averaged 27.0 points a game. Very fast and agile despite his size, Drexler was a master on the fast break and also had a good outside shot. Named to the All-NBA third team in 1990 and to the second team in 1988 and 1991, Drexler was a first team selection in 1992, when he averaged 25.0 points a game. He missed much of the 1992-93 season with a back injury. During the 1994-95 season, Drexler was traded to the Houston Rockets, the defending NBA champions, who needed more firepower at guard. Drexler helped them win their second straight title. He retired after the 1997-98 season. Top of Page History Biography Glossaries Calendar Quotations Trivia ... Directory
