Sports Who will light Olympic flame?; Betty Fox, Rick Hansen, Trevor Linden and Wayne Gretzky are mentioned Started 9 months ago by Canwest Global (4 posts) (2 voices) Canwest Global Inactive Canwest News Service As the Olympic torch relay gets closer and closer to Vancouver, the No. 1 question for Games watchers is: Who will light the Olympic flame at the opening ceremonies? We asked Province readers, and four names came to the fore: Betty Fox, Trevor Linden, Rick Hansen and Wayne Gretzky. Former Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden is a good choice from a Vancouver perspective, as a local legend and former Olympian who devotes time to charitable causes, but outside of hockey circles, his low profile may hinder his hopes. Wheelchair athlete and advocate Rick Hansen wheeled around the world for charity, and has made the world a more accessible place for those with disabilities, so his credentials probably fit the bill. Which leaves Wayne Gretzky, arguably the most famous Canadian in countries outside our borders, telegenic and thoughtful. | |
