When the fun gets deep enough... Bernie DeKoven, FUNcoach ... it can heal the world. Quote of the moment:
Bill Russell and the Well-Played Game
The following passage is from former Celtics great Bill Russell, in his book: Second Wind: The Memoirs of an Opinionated Man , Random House, 1979, pp 155-158. In it, he describes the transcendant experience that I call " The Well-Played Game " Every so often a Celtic game would heat up so that it became more than a physical or even mental game, and would be magical. That feeling is difficult to describe, and I certainly never talked about it when I was playing. When it happened I could feel my play rise to a new level. It came rarely, and would last anywhere from five minutes to a whole quarter or more. Three or four plays were not enough to get it going. It would surround not only me and the other Celtics but also the players on the other team, and even the referees. To me, the key was that both teams had to be playing at their peaks, and they had to be competitive. The Celtics could not to it alone. I remember the fifth and final game of the 1965 championship series, when we opened the fourth quarter ahead of the Lakers by sixteen points, playing beautifully together, and then we simply took off into unknown peaks and ran off twenty straight points to go up by thirty-six points, and astounding margin for a championship series. We were on fire, intimidating, making shots, running the break, and the Lakers just couldn't score. As much as I wanted to win that championship, I remember being disappointed that the Lakers were not playing better. We were playing well enough to attain that special level, but we couldn't do it without them.

Russell, Bill,
byname of WILLIAM FELTON RUSSELL (b. Feb. 12, 1934, Monroe, La., U.S.), American basketball player regarded in his day as the greatest defensive centre in the history of the game. He set standards by which other exceptionally tall players were judged (his height was 6 feet 10 inches). On April 18, 1966, he became the first black coach of a major professional sports team (the Boston Celtics) in the United States. Reared in Oakland, Calif., Russell led the University of San Francisco to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in two consecutive seasons (1954-55 and 1955-56). After playing on the U.S. team that won the 1956 Olympic basketball championship at Melbourne, he joined the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). With Russell at centre, the Celtics won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. He coached the last two of those championship teams but retired as coach in 1969. On five occasions Russell was voted the most valuable player in the NBA. In 1967 the Associated Press named him one of the five members of its All-America collegiate team for the preceding 20 years; later the AP selected him the outstanding professional basketball player of the 1960s. He was coach and general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics (1973-77). His autobiography
