The 'Choke' Artist
By Mike Puma

Signature Event
Dec. 1, 1997 -
Three days after being fined for missing a team flight and arriving late to Salt Lake City the night before a game, Latrell Sprewell let Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo know that it was best to leave him alone. "I don't want to hear it today," Sprewell said after Carlesimo asked him to throw crisper passes during a practice. Tensions had been boiling between the two. Three weeks earlier, Carlesimo yanked Sprewell from a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, calling him a joke, because Sprewell was laughing in the huddle during a timeout. The Lakers held a big lead at the time. Today, Carlesimo was warned by Sprewell not to approach him. When the coach ignored the caveat, Sprewell grabbed Carlesimo by the throat for 10-15 seconds before the other players stepped in. About 20 minutes later, Sprewell returned to throw punches at the coach. He landed a glancing blow. "What I did was wrong, but when you sit back and watch it take off, you realize you have no control over it," Sprewell said. "Once the media got hold of it, it wasn't coming back. It was me against the world at that point."

"There was just a buildup of anger and frustration and having it all bottled up and not being able to express myself. At that point, it just came to a head," says Latrell Sprewell on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Regardless of what he accomplishes in basketball, Latrell Sprewell will live in infamy as the player who attacked and threatened to kill his coach. During a Golden State Warriors practice in 1997, Sprewell snapped, choking P.J. Carlesimo before returning about 20 minutes later to continue the assault. NBA Commissioner David Stern suspended Sprewell for 82 games before an arbitrator reduced the sentence to 68 games, costing Sprewell $6.4 million and his shoe deal with Converse. Sprewell deemed the punishment too harsh. "I wasn't choking P.J. that hard," Sprewell told 60 Minutes. "I mean, he could breathe." Stern called Sprewell a symbol of the "widening gulf" between professional athletes and the fans. Sprewell claimed his being an African-American tainted the public's view of the attack on his coach. "I want people to know I'm not a bad guy," he said. "I never said I shouldn't be punished for what I did. We just said the punishment was excessive."

Life's Work Latrell Sprewell, a rising NBA star, would be known more for his off-court antics than his basketball skill in the 1990s. Though his basketball career began late, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a top-notched player. With the jury still out, only time will tell whether Sprewell will make it to the Hall of Fame or Hall of Shame. Late Basketball Bloomer Latrell Sprewell was born on September 8, 1970 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Soon after he was born the family moved from Milwaukee to Flint, Michigan. When Sprewell was a sophomore in high school, his parents, Pamela Sprewell and Latoska Field, separated and Sprewell moved back to Milwaukee with his mother. It was not until his senior year of high school that the man who would become an NBA All Star even took up the game seriously. James Gordon, the basketball coach at Washington High, saw Sprewell in the hall and invited him to try out for the team. Despite having no experience playing in a system, Sprewell made the team and ended up averaging 28 points per game. Because of his

Being a player is the thing
Sporting News, The Feb 22, 1999 by Shaun Powell
The warm reception Latrell Sprewell has received in New York is the latest example of a troubled player being forgiven because he is a gifted athlete The city is clutching him tightly, the way he once did P.J. Carlesimo's neck, only this is a romantic, lip-lock kind of embrace. Latrell Sprewell is choking from New York's affection. Imagine that. "I'm surprised," he says. "Very much so. I thought I would have to prove myself for a month first. But they kind of accepted me from the first night out, before I put up my first shot." On the day they announced he was coming, Lady Liberty tossed aside her torch and hoisted a basketball. Ellis Island re-opened its doors. New York City welcomed another immigrant, the most notorious basketball player of the past few years. Almost immediately, the switchboard at the Knicks' offices began buzzing. Cheap seats were scooped up. Spike Lee traded his John Starks No. 3 jersey for a Sprewell No. 8. Cornrows became the new fashion trend on the streets.
