Wang Zhizhi Bridges Chinese Basketball with World
It is a year of ecstasy to the Chinese basketball fans. After a prolonged longing for the world elite basketball league, the American National Basketball Association (NBA), China's talent Wang Zhizhi wrapped up the Odyssey of joining the Dallas Mavericks team to become the first Asian player in NBA. Wang's step has the significance of a milestone of Chinese basketball, and his occidental trip opened the door to the world for his peers in the domestic league.

Dream Comes True
The 25-year-old center had his dream come true in April when he joined the Mavericks for the 2000-01 season play-off, before he put his full commitment to the American club this season in November.
  • Long-time Wait Before Wang Goes

  • But the 2.15-meter sensation, a Chinese Army lieutenant colonel, did have a hard time to wait for the his military seniors and the Chinese basketball officials to let him go.
The Chinese Army is a powerhouse in Chinese sports and the military sports machine has created hundreds of world champions.

Wang Zhizhi Expelled from National Basketball Team
The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) announced its decision September 9 afternoon to expel its former member Wang Zhizhi out of the national men's basketball team.
According to agreements between CBA and Dallas Mavericks, Wang should serve the need of national team by returning to China and preparing for international matches after finishing NBA games in America in last May.
But Wang, after receiving CBA's notice demanding him to return home and join in training for the World Championships and the Asian Games, stayed in America under the excuse of personal need and training for NBA summer leagues, and further cut off contacts with CBA. After the leagues finished Wang refused to meet people from CBA and made clear his hope to say in NBA instead of returning to China, CBA's announcement said.
During a period as long as five months, China's team made many efforts in a hope to change Wang's mind, and publicly promised that Wang could continue its NBA training after the World Championships and the Asian Games as well as made corresponding preparations for him.
But Wang, regardless of professional codes, disciplines and national interests, stuck to his personal interests and chose not to return home and represent China in international games, CBA said.

Ibn Notes: Believe it or not, Yao Ming wasn't the first Chinese player to play in the NBA. It was Wang Zhizhi. After being drafted by the Dallas Mavericks, the Chinese superstar had a following of Chinese fans in every city, fans hoping to catch the 7-0 sharpshooter displaying his multitudes of skills pm the cpurt. However, Zhizhi found himself being used sparingly in Dallas with the development of Dirk Nowitzki and hustling role-player Eduardo Najera . During the summer of 2002, China called for Wang Zhizhi to come back to China to train with their national team for the World Championships... after weeks of back and forth, Wang disappeared. After 60 games in Dallas and his flat-out refusal to go home to China, Wang reappeared in Los Angeles, where he announced that he would not be going home to China. Instead, he said that he was participating in the Clipper's summer League. Chinese officials were not happy (and this had repercussions on Yao Ming's entry into the league the next year) Zhizhi worked hard to impress, unfortunately, the hope of more minutes did not develop with the Clippers as he had hoped. He was later waived and then signed by the Miami Heat, where playing time is again sparse for Wang Zhizhi. And it's not looking good this season for Wang as the Heat obtained Antoine Walker.

    WANG ZHIZHI
Biography: Wang Zhizhi is a professional basketball player formerly in the American National Basketball Association. Wang was the first person from mainland China to play in the NBA, (though Ma Jian was on a preseason NBA roster in 1995). Wang was previously a star of the Chinese national team and played for the Bayi Rockets of the Chinese Basketball Association. The trio of Wang Zhizhi (7'1"), Yao Ming (7'6"), and Mengke Bateer (6'11") was known as the "Walking Great Wall" of the Chinese national basketball team. All three have also played in the NBA. Wang was dismissed from the national team for failing to return to China to practice. He was signed by the Dallas Mavericks in 2001, and later played for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Miami Heat. An athletic and tall player at 7'1" (216 cm), Wang was primarily known in the NBA as a long-range shooter. However, he was previously crowned the slam dunk champion one year in China's CBA league. His minutes were very limited in the NBA, never more than 10.9 a game, and he became a free agent at the end of the 2005 season. In late 2005, Wang was not playing professional basketball in the NBA or China. He averaged 4.4 points and 9.9 minutes per game over 5 seasons in the NBA. On April 10, 2006, following weeks of rumors in Chinese media, Wang returned home from the United States after being expelled from the national team for four years. He publicly apologized for his past mistakes, and said he wanted to represent the country to play in the World Tournament later in 2006 as well as the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. It is unknown if he will rejoin his former Bayi team; Bayi's current young center Mo Ke's outstanding performance may be an obstacle.
