MARIO LEMIEUX BIOGRAPHY
Mario Lemieux (born October 5, 1965 in Montreal, Quebec) is a professional hockey player. Nicknamed "Le Magnifique" and "Super Mario", his surname literally means "the best". He was born on the same day as fellow hockey-player Patrick Roy. Lemieux is 6ft 4in (1.93m) and weighs 230lb (104kg). He plays as a centre.
Early career
Mario Lemieux was born October 5, 1965 in Montreal. From a very early age he displayed remarkable skill in hockey. When he was too young to skate with the older kids in his neighborhood he learned how to skate in his living room when his mother would pack their living room with snow to keep the carpet fresh during the winter. At an early age Lemieux was considered a hockey prodigy and then Montreal coach Scotty Bowman actually suggested that they buy the team he was on in order to guarantee first shot at signing the young star. "Mario was one guy that could really motivate me to push my game to another level. I knew eventually he was going to chase me down and pull me back. I am not Mario Lemieux.
Je ne suis pas Mario Lemieux. http://www.mariolemieux.com/ Official site for Mario! Le Magnifique, Mario Lemieux, changed hockey history in many ways. Not only did he earn several awards and trophies , but he brought the Pittsburgh Penguins from an obscure, possibly to-be-sold team to one that rivals the popularity of any NHL team. Just look for his number 66 hockey sweater at any game in any city! Mario retired at the young age of 31, making his statistics eternally frozen like the ice he used to skate on. But his memory will never retire.
Update 13.12.00: Nor it seems, will Mario retire. He is returning to play hockey! PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mario Lemieux, whose comeback has excited his sport as much as Michael Jordan's did for basketball, wants to be hockey's dominant player again. "I'm not coming back to embarrass myself," Lemieux said at a news conference Monday. "I wouldn't come back unless I thought I could play at a high level, regain the title of the best player in the world. I have the desire and passion to do it." Lemieux denied his unexpected comeback after a 3 1/2-year layoff has anything to do with enhancing the finances of the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise he now owns. He also predicted it would be even more successful than the comebacks he made in 1991 from back surgery, in 1993 from cancer and in 1995 from a year's layoff for health reasons. "I feel it will be the easiest," he said. "I'm healthy and I've been resting for 3 1/2 years. I'm getting a fresh start mentally and physically." Lemieux, 35, plans to start practicing with the Penguins early next week.

Biography
Canadian-American hockey player, the pre-eminent star of his game with effortless ease. He is fast and strong, 6' 4", 210 lbs, a center with the Pittsburgh Penguins. When first drafted from French Canada, he was shy to enter the alien world of Pittsburgh hockey. The strong, silent type, he is dark and good-looking. He and his wife and three kids settled in a large, turn-of-the-century mansion not far from the city. They separated in 1992. Lemieux had surgery for a back injury in 1992 that was extremely painful. In 1993, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease when doctors found a cancerous lump in his neck. He cried upon hearing the verdict but has not done so since. He took a year off, fatigued with radiation. Returning to hockey he became the league's leading scorer and Most Valuable Player of 1995-96.

This is a perfect ending for the best hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates. Many will remember his skill on the ice. To others his leadership will stand out. I will always remember him as both. Novermber 19, 1997 will always be remembered as the last time Mario stepped on to the ice, to see his number 66 retired.

Leno wanted Lemieux to appear with him Feb. 2, two days before the NHL All-Star game in Denver. Lemieux vetoed the trip to Los Angeles so his 4-four-year son, Austin, wouldn't be subjected to wearying travel. In 13 games since ending his 44-month retirement, Lemieux has 14 goals and 12 assists, the same two-points-a-game pace he maintained during his first 12 NHL seasons. He has three multiple-goal games, including his 40th career hat trick in a 3-1 win over Montreal Wednesday. "That's why he's one of the greatest players to ever play the game," Canadiens defenseman Karl Dykhuis said. "Everything he does is head and shoulders above everybody else."
