Report on Mario Lemieux
Stanley Cup Finals 2009 Stats and Awards Pictures Retirement ... Special Events MARIO LEMIEUX INTRODUCTION Few would dispute Mario Lemieux's position as one of the most naturally talented players in NHL history because of his offensive skills, enthusiasm, and leadership which he brought to the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team despite cancer and other health problems. He was born, like others of French heritage, with the surname Lemieux, which translates "the best." Mario was possessed with the talent to live up to the name. In the late eighties and half of the nineties (when his health permitted it), Mario surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the most prolific scorer in the world. Before his 1997 "retirement," Lemieux was the only player to average more than two points a game. His goal-scoring percentage of 8.23 (613 goals in 745 games) was the best for players with 150 games. But Lemieux's most remarkable feat is overcoming Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymph nodes that had taken the life of one of his cousins, and a debilitating back injury. "When asked which was a tougher hockey task for him, battling back from Hodgkin's disease in 1993 or coming back to action after a three-and-a-half year layoff, Lemieux had this to say: "I think the one coming back from the radiation treatments was probably the most successful, I would think because of the fact that I didn't train for six weeks and just went to the hospital every day and I had radiation treatments and my strength was depleted. To be able to come back, I think I averaged close to three points or over three points in the last few games to catch Pat LaFontaine was probably the best of all the comebacks. "

Mario Lemieux played professional ice hockey for 17 seasons seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL (betweeen 1984 and 2006) and is now the Penguins principal owner and chairman, after having fighting to keep the team from bankruptcy in 1999. Lemieux is regarded by most in the hockey community as one of the greatest players to ever play in the NHL. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy twice while leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to winning two Stanley Cup championships, led the NHL in scoring six times (Art Ross trophy), was named MVP three times (Hart Trophy) and scored 199 points during his best season (Wayne Gretzky has been the only player to ever reach the 200 point mark in a single season) despite missing many games due to illness and injury.

Mario Lemieux Welcome to Riz 's Mario Lemieux page! I've dedicated this website to the legendary Mario Lemieux because he's the best hockey player, ever.
Mario has played with the Pittsburgh Penguins ever since he was drafted by them in 1984. He came to Pittsburgh as the Number One Pick in that years entry draft. At the time Pittsburgh was the worst team in the league and was struggling terribly. In seven short years Mario turned that team around and the Penguins won the first of two consecutive Stanley Cups in the spring of 1991. Mario has also actively played in international competitions, representing Canada. He scored his famous 1987 goal which won Canada the Canada Cup, and Captained Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Columnists Madden: Refs play key role in Mario's future Saturday, January 06, 2001 Mario Lemieux's renewed love for hockey is so obvious that it's easy to forget how much he hated the game when he retired in 1997. The NHL had better not forget. Not if it wants Lemieux to play beyond this season. Mario's contempt for NHL-style hockey was very evident back in '97. He loathed the clutching and grabbing, the trapping and hooking. He hated that grit (i.e., lack of talent) got more leeway than skill and, seemingly, more respect as well. He was livid that hockey's superstars couldn't display their brilliance on a nightly basis. The refereeing was horrendous. The sport was tailored for the Brian Skrudlands of the world, for the lunch-pail guys, not for the elite. Not for the Mario Lemieuxs. So Lemieux quit.

Career Statistics Other Resources Just when everyone thought no one would ever surpass Wayne Gretzky as a hockey player, Mario Lemieux came along. Lemieux didn't surpass Gretzky but he came close and in the process he proved himself to be a remarkably courageous player. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Lemieux averaged more than 4 points a game in his final season of junior hockey before joining the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984. He scored on his first NHL shot and went to record an even 100 points in his first season, winning the Calder Trophy as the league's outstanding rookie. After scoring 141 and 107 points in his next two seasons, Lemieux won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's scoring leader two seasons in a row. He had 70 goals and 98 assists for 168 points in 1987-88, 85 goals and 114 assists for 199 points in 1988-89. Lemieux also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the player of the year in 1987-88. Lemieux missed the last 21 games of the 1989-90 season because of a herniated disc, but he still had 123 points. There was doubt about whether he would ever play again after undergoing an operation for the disc problem.
