We are running squid and it is much faster. But our memory is 128MB physical with 64MB swap and 2MB leased line to the Internet peaking at 256k with double your user. 2 areas worth looking at: 1. 256MB of Swap and 64MB of physical memory? With other OS's, having "to much" swap will cause it to run much slower. (Hard drives are very slow compared to memory) 2. How much is the link utilised (the 64k link to Internet)? With that amount of users, I would expect to see your link flooded which will make things slow.
