Passport for Travel to US
May 28th, 2009 If you travel to the United States at all, I hope you’ve been paying attention to the radio and newspaper ads telling you to get a passport to travel south of the border. While this has been a requirement for air travel, it now extends to crossing the border by car as well. The need for a passport to travel to the U.S. is not a Canadian government requirement. It is an American rule, a result of 9-11.  This passport requirement was actually supposed to be implemented a couple of years back. But lobbying by Canadian MPs convinced the U.S. Congress to delay the new restriction. While I’m hopeful that these new rules won’t hurt trade between Canada and the U.S., I am saddened by the ‘thickening” of the border between our two countries.  While business has slowly been finding ways to work with border regulations, ordinary travel is sure to be affected. Americans who want to come up to Canada for a weekend will pass on the opportunity and our two nations could grow farther apart. Canada and the U.S. have fought together in six wars in the last 100 years; many families have ties on both sides of the border. It is not a good thing that our American cousins have retreated behind a wall, afraid of the world. As a Member of Parliament, I will continue to work to keep Canadian travel and trade free. I will keep explaining to my American colleagues why the United States needs to be open to Canada.

While there are certainly punk elements throughout Fake Surfers —noisy guitars, thick, smarmy bass riffs, and shouted vocals battle for attention—here those sounds, along with an infectious, youthful attitude, are applied to a much more diverse collection of musical styles. Fake Surfers haphazardly switches from dark, drum machine dirges to sunny, careening pop, but somehow the skuzzy songs fit together. This bizarre coherence is best witnessed toward the end of Fake Surfers during a string of three of the album’s best songs. The run starts with the slow build and release of “Thank You God for Fixing the Tape,” a raucous journey through the theological musings of a teenager by way of a hooky, repetitive vocal line. This dense piece disintegrates into a ramshackle, country-fried cover of Wounded Lion’s “Pony People,” complete with thick organs and acoustic guitars. From here, things move in a more tropical direction with “Singles Barge,” which takes those acoustic strums and drags them through the sleazy territory that the title hints at. Though diverse and episodic

This was taped by John Hotze ( www.johnhartford.org ) at the Peaceful Bend Winery in May 2009 (the flatpicking festival). Thank you for all your good work John.
Tim May is a world-class guitarist, resophonic guitarist, and mandolinist who started out playing banjo in the family band growing up in Mississippi. Hearing Tony Rice and Dan Crary made a flatpicking guitarist convert out of him in a big way, and Tim has spent years exploring and pushing his craft.
Tim's songs "Father Time" and "King of Babylon" appear on Pat Flynn's latest CD, reVision. Tim is currently working as part of a band called PLAIDGRASS, which plays interesting mix of Irish, Scottish, Old Time and Bluegrass tunes.

Senators - Playing Games in Ottawa
May 22nd, 2007 As of May 18th the Senate has spent a total of 353 days debating a bill that will restrict the terms of senators to eight years. Senators are not elected (that may change soon) they are appointed. And senators serve until they are 75 years old. They are accountable to no one. But this bill (Bill S-4) only affects new senators, so why are the Liberal senators fighting so hard to keep this piece of legislation from becoming law? There are two reasons why Liberal senators are opposed to limiting their term in Canada’s “Chamber of Sober, Second Thought” to eight years. First, they know Bill S-4 will inevitably lead to an elected Senate, with legitimate (i.e. elected) senators and illegitimate ones (i.e. appointed patronage hacks). Democratization of the Senate will put pressure on appointed senators to leave their jobs. The second reason why Liberal senators are stalling the bill: They are upset at getting caught wasting taxpayers’ money. In September of 2006, four senators and three support staff spent a week at a swanky hotel in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Their hotel bill alone cost you the taxpayer $30,000.

Brothers and Sisters
Filed under: Show Previews Brothers and Sisters Show Preview “Wrap me in a blanket of patience.” Will Courtney, lead singer of Brothers and Sisters, delivers these words almost off-handedly at the beginning of “I Want You,” a track from the band’s self-titled debut. Despite its casual delivery, this phrase is a ripe and descriptive metaphor for the sound of the Austin-based group. The music of Brothers and Sisters is the aural equivalent of a familiar, warm blanket.  With, at times, up to 10 members contributing to the band’s sunny hymns, the sound of Brothers and Sisters very literally wraps around the listener. The lush instrumentation and pulsing rhythms that the band provides are at once comforting and reassuring, pulling listeners into the well-worn contours of the songs. Once deep within the folds of the song, Will Courtney’s lyrics begin to conjure hazy memories and images of another time. Taking equally from the homespun, earthy tales of classic country and the sun-drenched harmonies of the Beach Boys, Courtney’s are the types of songs that just feel like home. In this respect, the music of Brothers and Sisters resides within the same realm of comfort as records like , and Paul Simon’s Graceland Though they have tapped into this well of timeless classics, the music of Brothers and Sisters add more to the mixture by incorporating components of the Austin music scene. Along with showing hints of the city’s patented alt-country sound, many of the band’s compositions mirror the openness of the Texas landscape, with swooping pedal-steel and soaring back-up vocals. But, even with this spaciousness, the songs still feel intimate and close – like they are being performed in your basement at home.
