MATS SUNDIN FANATICS :: About Mats Sundin Mats Sundin was born on February 13, 1971 in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. Growing up in the Nordic country, he grew up playing hockey. He moved up the ranks and played with the Djurgardens IF Stockholm of the Swedish Elite League. In 1989 he was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques of the National Hockey League. Sunding became the first European to be drafted first overall in the 1989 draft. He began playing with the Nordiques in 1990-91 and did not disappoint, scoring 58 points in his rookie year. His next full season was even better, almost doubling his stats with 103 points. A year before the Nords moved to Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche, they traded Sundin in 1994 along with Garth Butcher, Todd Warriner and a draft choice to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre, Landon Wilson and a Leafs draft pick. Mats excelled with the Toronto Maple Leafs , becoming a key player in their successfull teams. As the overall scoring has been going down in the NHL, Sundin's invdividual numbers have been going lower. But, he has been a consistent offensive performer who has also added better two-way play to his game. His leadership and skill have been key in Toronto's success over the last decade. He has also been a seven time NHL All-Star selection and is a central figure of the Maple Leafs.

Mats Sundin
Mats Sundin was born on February 13, 1971 in Bromma, Sweden. He began playing for Djurgardens Stockholm in the Swedish Elite League (SEL) when he was fifteen years old. In 1989 Sundin became the first European born player to be taken first overall in the NHL amateur entry draft, taken by the Quebec Nordiques. He left Sweden under a lot of critique but started his NHL career in 1990-91 with a bang, scoring 59 points as a rookie. His offensive output would continue to grow with the Nordiques as he teamed up with Joe Sakic, breaking the 100 point mark in 1992-93. His stint in Quebec ended during the 1994-95 season when he was sent to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with Garth Butcher, Todd Warriner and a draft pick for Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre, Landon Wilson and a draft pick.
The move to Toronto added a lot more pressure on the the 6'4" Swede's shoulder. Not only was he playing in the "Mecca of Hockey" but he also had to fill the big shoes left by Leaf favourite Wendel Clark. Mats settled in with the Maple Leafs and provided them with a steady offensive presence. Averaging close to a point per game, he was named team captain and has gone on to become one of the highest paid players in the NHL. Mats continues to ply his trade in Toronto, playing on a perennial hockey powerhouse and working towards his first Stanley Cup victory.

Published July 22, 2008 @ 12:00 in Toronto Maple Leafs It's July 22 and it's Mats Sundin, Mats Sundin, Mats Sundin, Mats Sundin, Mats Sundin, Mats Sundin, Mats Sundin. A Swedish newspaper reported he was set to sign with Vancouver, then his agent denied the claim. Another Swedish newspaper conducted a poll asking fans where they think the free agent centre will wind up, and the results were strongly in the Maple Leafs' favour, at 37 per cent. Will he return? Will he retire? Will he sign elsewhere? It's all about Mats Sundin. Personally, I think Mats Sundin makes us too good. I love the guy, I think he's a class act with a boatload of skill and loyal to a fault, but I've got my heart set on a 30 win season and #13 will make us a tad too competitive. Still, I suspect The Mats will announce his return as some point this summer and he'll retire next summer as a Toronto Maple Leaf. In the meantime, the Toronto media will run with Mats Sundin story after Mats Sundin story giving the people what they want. All Mats, all the time. That reminds me, I'm due to visit

Why Sundin is Done with the NHL
There has been a lot of question over where Mats Sundin will sign during this off season. However, there is no guarantee that he will be playing at all this coming season. While he still is able to play if he wants to, there is little reason to believe that he does. While there has been no official word on his retirement, he has been rather quiet this off season, and well there are many teams that would love to sign him nobody knows exactly what to expect.
One of the leading candidates to sign Sundin are the Vancouver Canucks. At the start of free agency on July 1st, Mats Sundin turned down a contract offer from them. The Montreal Canadian's are another leading contender, but nothing has happened there either.
One of the issues, may be Sundin's die hard loyalty to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has played his entire career with the team, and really doesn't want to leave. Last season when he was asked to waive his no trade clause, he refused, despite being in the final year of his contract, and with a team that clearly had no shot at making the post-season. However, going back to the trade Toronto has made it rather clear that they don't really intend to bring back Sundin for another season, and are surely not offering him another no trade clause.
