Z Mark Bosnich Biography Mark Bosnich (born January 13, 1972), is Australia's best ever soccer goalkeeper, representing his country on many occasions and playing for English Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
Growing up in Fairfield, a suburb of Sydney, Bosnich played briefly for Sydney Croatia (a team in the Australian National Soccer League), before moving, at age 16, to join Manchester United. After two seasons there, he left to join Aston Villa, where he made his reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
His appearances with the Australian national team were quite rare (as indeed they are for most Australian players, as a full-strength Australian side is only assembled for World Cup qualification playoffs), but memorable, keeping Australia in the away leg of its home-and-away playoff with Iran to enter the 1996 Cup. His heroics were wasted after midfield defensive errors and missed opportunities allowed Iran a 2-2 draw in the home leg and thus let them through on away goals.
In 1999 he transferred back to Manchester United but it was not a happy move as he was soon relegated to third-choice keeper. He chose to stay at United and try to regain his spot rather than accept being loaned to Scottish club Celtic. He transferred to Chelsea in 2001, but again failed to gain a place in the first team.

Overlooked and underrated Filan keeps up the good work
January 10 2003 John on the spot: Australian goalkeeper John Filan's arrival at Wigan has been mutually rewarding for club and player. Photo: Getty Images Bosnich and Schwarzer may be the headline grabbers but John Filan's saves do his talking, writes Michael Cockerill. He may be regarded by his manager as the best goalkeeper in England outside the Premier League, but in his own country John Filan remains largely forgotten. Not that he's complaining. A month away from Australia's prestige friendly against England in London, all sorts of names are being thrown around in the selection debate. Filan's, however, is not one of them, and the closest he expects to get to Upton Park is through the television set in his lounge room. This for a player with 78 Premier League appearances - the last as recently as a year ago - and whose talents have generally been regarded as the equal of the other great Australian keepers of his generation, Mark Bosnich, Mark Schwarzer and Zeljko Kalac. But while that trio have hogged the headlines and won the plaudits, 32-year-old Filan has been restricted to two Socceroo caps, the last in Budapest five years ago.

Bosnich admits cocaine addiction
August 18, 2003 Print this article Email to a friend Mark Bosnich. Mark Bosnich has dramatically admitted to a $5000-a-week cocaine habit - but says he only took the recreational drug after he was banned from international soccer. Bosnich was banned by the Football Association for nine months after testing positive to cocaine in a random test late last year. His then club, Chelsea, sacked him from his £42,000 ($102,900)-a-week contract. He has a little over a month of his ban to go and has been training with Premiership newcomers Portsmouth. He told British newspaper News of the World he had been clean of the drug for a fortnight after a confrontation with his father, who flew over from Australia to visit him. "This is my confession," Bosnich said. "Until a couple of weeks ago I was addicted to cocaine. "My life was ruled by drugs and I was a mess. I was staying awake on coke for days on end. It was destroying me."
