He played 345 times for the club and scored 222 goals including three in the 1953 FA Cup "Matthews" Final victory over Bolton Wanderers. The England star remains the only player to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Morty - as he was known - also managed to score 23 goals in 25 England appearances Stanley Matthews
The first professional footballer to be knighted - was the most renowned player of modern times. His professional career covered some 33 years. When he retired in 1965 -aged 50 - he had made nearly 700 League appearances for Stoke City and Blackpool and had played for England 84 times, including two appearances for Great Britain. It was said Matthews' presence in a team could add 10,000 to away gates. Matthews did not receive a single booking during his long career. Bill Perry
Born in Johannesburg Bill Perry found himself signing for Blackpool after being recommended his manager at Johannesburg Rangers. He had previously turned down the chance to come to England and play for Charlton but found the idea of playing first division hard to turn down when joining the seasiders. Bill made his debut at Old Trafford in a 2-1 win for the seasiders. Bill played for Blackpool in the FA Cup final defeat against Newcastle in 1951 but his sadness turned to joy after scoring the winning goal in the seasiders 4-3 over Bolton in 1953. Bill went on to represent England three times after qualifyingfor England via his father. Bill left Blackpool in 1962 joining Southport for the sum of £3,500. He stayed at Southport for just one season before moving to Australia to play there.

Sir Stanley Matthews back Nicknamed the Wizard of Dribble in Britain, known abroad as Der Zauberer (the magician), Stanley Matthews, who has died aged 85, was the first ever European Footballer of the Year, and arguably the outstanding British player of his generation. His career stretched from well before the second world war to the 1960s; he was still playing League football at 50. At 41, at Wembley, he was capable of demolishing as famous a left-back as Brazil's Milton Santos. Afterwards, in the England dressing room, in a rare moment of spleen, he said that when he read that he was too old he was sometimes tempted to tear up the paper. But the truth is that throughout his career, Matthews was constantly accused of being too this, that or the other. Too unpredictable. Too individualistic. Too slow to release the ball. In one wartime Wembley international there was a small scandal when it was alleged that he had deliberately been starved of the ball. At the end of the war, when football officially restarted, he was excluded from the England team for most of the 1946-47 season in favour of Tom Finney, an outside-right with almost as remarkable a body swerve - only to return in triumph in Lisbon, Matthews on the right, Finney on the left, Portugal routed, 10-0. As early as November, 1934, when England won the bruising Battle of Highbury against an Italian team which ran amok when its Argentine captain, Luisito Monti, limped early off the field with a broken foot, Matthews was damned in the Daily Mail. Geoffrey Simpson, its sports columnist, wrote: "I saw Matthews play just as moderately in the recent inter-League match, exhibiting the same slowness and hesitation. Perhaps he lacks the big match temperament."

The ‘Wizard of Dribble’ Stanley Matthews is probably one of the best known names in English football. An immensely highly regarded and respected player and a spectacular crowd pleaser, Matthews dominated the post-war period with displays of ball control and change of pace up and down the wings of pitches worldwide. Matthews’ style was deceptively languid, facing up to a full back to take them on, trying a shimmy or a dummy, and then, once they’d committed themselves, accelerating rapidly past them with the ball tied to his laces. Danny Blanchflower, the legendary Spurs and Northern Ireland captain of the Fifties and Sixties said:”You usually knew how he’d beat you, but you couldn’t do anything about it. His crosses and pull backs were accurate too, and although his goal tally seems relatively low, at 11 goals in 54 caps, the tactics of the era meant that his effectiveness was more about making goals for others, such as centre forwards or the inside right and inside left players. When Matthews did score goals, it was more than likely when he came in to play as an inside right to try and increase his influence on a game.
Early Start
Matthews’ talent had been recognised at an early age and he played for England schoolboys before signing up for local side Stoke City in 1932. His England debut came two years later against Wales, at the age of 19, when he scored in a 4-0 win. He fast became an England regular and got his only hat-trick in 1937 when a ten-man team beat Czechoslovakia 5-4. Bizarrely, Matthews scored all three goals with his left leg, generally considered to be fit only for standing on.

This is a very effective move, especially when the enemy is patiently containing you. To successfully execute the Matthews move, you need to attack the supporting foot of the enemy defender. Initially, the attacker pushes the ball in, towards the free leg of the defender. The he suddenly cuts to the outside. This leaves the defender helpless as the ball rolls past his supporting foot.

Biography: Stanley Matthews This article is about the English football player. For the justice of the United States Supreme Court, see Thomas Stanley Matthews. Sir Stanley Matthews, CBE (February 1, 1915 - February 23, 2000) was a football player, often regarded as one of the greats of the English game. Gaining the nicknames The Wizard of the Dribble and The Magician , Matthews retains his reputation as one of the finest dribblers of the ball in the history of association football. A teetotaller and vegetarian, he kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old, the oldest player ever to play in England's top football division. Matthews was born in Seymour Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent and was the third of four sons. His father, Jack Matthews (aka The Fighting Barber of Hanley ), was a renowned local boxer who fostered a sense of discipline, determination and sportsmanship that would serve his son well during his long career. He attended St Lukes School.
