Alessandro nasce a Milano il 7 marzo 1785, in via S. Damiano, dal nobile (vedi note) Pietro Manzoni, un benestante proprietario terriero originario di Barzio in Valsassina, e da Giulia Beccaria figlia di Cesare Beccaria, il celebre illuminista autore dell'opera Dei delitti e delle pene , contro la tortura e la pena di morte. I Manzoni di antica origine lombarda, attestata a Lecco fin dal XIV secolo, erano per qualche tempo andati nella val Taleggio, infine si erano stabiliti a Barzio in Valsassina. In tale località si crede che i Manzoni fossero giunti a tal grado di potenza e di prepotenza da esigere che i loro dipendenti facessero omaggio non soltanto alle persone della famiglia, ma perfino al cane di guardia, davanti al quale dovevano scoprirsi, salutando con le parole "Reverissi, sior cà" (Riverisco signor cane). Il figlio Alessandro (nonno e omonimo dello scrittore) a Caleotto ebbe 12 figli; viventi 7 femmine e due maschi, di cui uno canonico e Pietro, il padre del Nostro.

Alessandro Stradella (ca. 1639-1682) Il Biante, an azione drammatica, was performed in honor of Pope Clement X. He was again compelled to leave Rome for Venice in 1677 after angering Cardinal Alderan Cibo. Documents in the archives at Turin relate that in 1677 he arrived there with the mistress of Alvise Contarini, with whom he had eloped from Venice. Contarini demanded that both should be given up to him, or failing that, that Stradella should not be allowed to exercise his profession until the lady had been either placed in a convent or made his legitimate wife. Stradella was protected by the regent of Savoy, the duchess Giovanni Battista de Nemours, and the Contarini family, indignant at his audacity, sent two hired assassins to Turin, by whom Stradella was wounded but not murdered. We hear of Stradella last at Genoa. There his comic opera Il trespolo tutore was performed ca. 1677, La Forza deli amor paterno, in 1678 and Le gare dell' amor eroica in 1679, and his last composition, Ii Barcheggio (i.e. a Water-Music ), was performed on June 16, 1681 in honor of the marriage of Carlo Spinola and Paola Brignole, which was solemnized on July 6 of the same year. Documents in the archives at Modena inform us that in February 1682 Stradella was murdered at Genoa by three brothers of the name of Lomellini, whose married sister he had seduced.

Ha esordito come critico musicale della "Repubblica" e poi come editorialista culturale della "Stampa". L'amore per la musica e per la letteratura ha ispirato fin dall'inizio la sua attività di brillante saggista e di narratore. Ha collaborato a trasmissioni radiofoniche e ha esordito in TV nel 1993 come conduttore di "L'amore è un dardo", una fortunata trasmissione di Raitre dedicata alla lirica, che rappresentava il tentativo di gettare un ponte tra un mondo affascinante ma spesso impenetrabile ai più, e il comune pubblico televisivo. Ha poi condotto nel 1994 un programma dedicato alla letteratura intitolato "Pickwick, del leggere e dello scrivere", affiancato dalla giornalista Giovanna Zucconi. In diesen Wochen kauft er die Larven von Seidenraupen ein - den Rest des Jahres verbringt er genügsam mit seiner Frau zu Hause. Doch seit einiger Zeit ist eine Epidemie unter den Seidenraupen aufgetaucht, die auch durch den Nachkauf von Larven aus Afrika nicht mehr einzudämmen ist. Nur in Japan sind die Raupen noch völlig gesund; niemand konnte sie hier eingeschleppt haben, denn Japan ist für Ausländer nicht geöffnet. Doch Hervé wagt es, reist um die halbe Welt, um die Larven zu kaufen. Am Hofe Hara Keis trifft er eine Frau mit dem Gesicht eines sehr jungen Mädchens, deren Augen nicht orientalisch geschnitten sind. Er wechselt kein Wort mit ihr, blickt sie kaum an.
