Olympic swimmer Susie O'Neill
Thursday, 28 July 2005 Presenter: Former Olympian Susie O'Neill For an entire decade, Olympic swimmer Susie O'Neill won a medal at every single international swimming competition. She holds a record 35 Australian titles and eight Olympic medals. Madame Butterfly, as she is known, was just 14 when she narrowly missed selection for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. But her career took off at the 1990 Commonwealth Games when she won both gold and silver medals. At 19, Susie created history by breaking Mary T Meagher's world record in the 200m butterfly to become Australian swimming's only female world title holder. Her record stood until Polish swimmer Otylia Jedrzejczac bettered her time in 2002.

16. Susie O’Neill:Australia Will Definitely Win
Indian Link, Linking Indians in Australia and Australians with India, Indian News in Australia.
http://www.indianlink.com.au/front-page/susie-oneill-blah-blah-blah/
Front Page News So how does it feel to be out of the water and on the other side as a spectator? “I was 15 at my first Commonwealth Games and I found it terrifying,” she said. And undoubtedly it would be a lot of pressure on the younger athletes, facing not only the competition but the media spotlight as well. And how does she think India, or more precisely Delhi, will handle the pressure of hosting the Games? She does have a few concerns for the athletes and even herself. “England are definitely up and coming, but I think Australia will definitely win.”

Susie O'Neill Swimming
Susan O’Neill ended her lustrous swimming career with eight Olympic medals - an Australian women’s record, shared with Dawn Fraser and Petria Thomas. (Ian Thorpe, with nine, is the only Australian with more.) Dubbed “Madame Butterfly” for her peerless quality as a butterfly swimmer, O’Neill attended three Olympic Games - winning bronze in Barcelona in 1992; gold, silver and bronze in Atlanta in 1996; and a gold and three silvers in Sydney in 2000. Although she was more famous (and more comfortable) with the butterfly - in which she achieved world No.1 ranking over both the 100m and 200m - she was also rated world No.1 in the 200m freestyle through 1999-2000. After winning the 200m butterfly at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and 1995 Pan Pacific titles, she won the 1996 Olympic gold medal in that event, defeating Ireland’s triple winner Michelle Smith, who was later found guilty of drug offences. One of O’Neill’s greatest triumphs came in May 2000, when she broke the 19-year-old 200m world record of the great Mary T. Meagher, swimming’s first Madame Butterfly. Her career ended paradoxically at the Sydney Olympics, when she won the race she didn’t expect to (the 200m freestyle), and finished second in the one she expected to win (the 200m butterfly). O’Neill, until then unbeaten in the butterfly event for six years, was the first Australian woman since Dawn Fraser to win gold in successive Olympics. She was elected to the IOC Athletes’ Commission by competitors at the 2000 Games, but family obligations caused her to resign in 2005.

What I like
I am a very keen participant and spectator in a wide variety of sports, many of them either unique to Australia or at least not played much outside of the Commonwealth. And being a sports fan in Australia is not such a bad thing as last year we won world championships in such diverse sports as netball, rugby, cricket, tennis (Davis Cup), surfing, triathlon and hockey and many others. On this and subsequent pages you will find some information about my favourite sports and sporting heroes with links to some of my favourite websites. My favourite spectator sports are swimming cricket and football and I have decided to dedicate a page to each. As far as playing sports is concerned I have dabbled in many things competitively including soccer, basketball, indoor cricket and tennis but my favourite by far is netball . I am also a big fan of the Olympics...
The Olympics
As the world knows Sydney and Australia put on the best ever Olympic Games in 2000. Not only did we put on a party for the rest of the world but we also pulled in out greatest every medal tally of 16 Gold 27 Silver and 17 bronze. This put us in 4th place after the US, Russia and China so I guess this makes us a Superpower too!
