Dara Torres, Swimming Click here for more on this story Posted: Friday July 30, 1999 12:13 PM Torres is poised to make a comeback. Ronald C. Modra Hometown: Beverly Hills, Calif. Upcoming Events: 2000 Olympic Trials, August 2000, Indianapolis, Ind. Worth Watching Because: The 1992 Olympic women's swim team captain is trying to make a splash in a sport she has not competed in for seven years. With her sights set on Sydney, Torres is training at Stanford University under Richard Quick, head coach of 2000 U.S. Olympic squad. Torres' comeback attempt shouldn't come as a total surprise she's done this before. A sprinter who held the world best time in the 50m freestyle from 1983-'86 (25.62) and set the American record in the 100m freestyle (55.30) in 1988, Torres retired from swimming for the first time a decade ago. In 1989, after a stellar career at the University of Florida including 28 All-America honors Torres dove into television, taking a post as a sports research assistant at NBC. In January 1991, after two years away from the pool, Torres put her TV career on hold and began training for the 1992 Games. With three Olympic relay team medals to her credit (1984: 400m freestyle, gold; 1988: 400m medley, silver; 400m freestyle, bronze), her aim was to win an individual medal. Within weeks of her comeback, Torres was setting records in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Though she fell short of her personal goal, Torres won gold as a member of the world-record setting 400m freestyle relay team in Barcelona. In the fall of 1992, Torres returned to broadcasting, working as a host and reporter for the Discovery Channel, ESPN, TNT and Fox News Channel, as well as a spokesperson for Tae-Bo workout tapes.

She won nine Olympic medals in all while competing at Los Angeles, Seoul (1988), Barcelona (1992), and then at Sydney (2000), where she won five medals despite having been retired from swimming for most of the 1990s. At Beijing she won medals in the 50-meter freestyle, the 4x100 freestyle relay, and the 4x100 medley relay. Dara Torres/ Swimming Winner of twelve Olympic medals, the first athlete to appear as a model for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, a successful broadcaster, and mother of two-year old Tessa Grace, Dara Torres has shattered expectations by making her record fifth US Olympic team. 10 Questions with Dara Torres
Dara Torres explains her motivation to race: "I'm so freaking competitive it's unbelievable." (Photo courtesy of Toyota Motorsports)
The beautiful Dara Torres is the first four time Olympian in women's swimming. Between Olympic years, Torres spends time as a catwalk model, journalist, and takes part in extreme sports. Now we can add high-speed driving to that list. With her incredible natural beauty, Torres was the first athlete to appear among the supermodels in Sports Illustrated 's swimsuit issue in 1994. (Imagine a woman who looks as good as Cindy Crawford or Kathy Ireland without even having to wear makeup!) She has also appeared on TV for Extreme Step The Next Step Fox Sports Sunday NHL Cool Shots , Tae Bo infomercials, Fitness Spokesperson for Self Magazine , and Turner Sports. After retiring from competitive swimming in 1992, Dana decided to return to the Olympic lanes, and began training in 1999. After some work to her physique (she gained 10 kg in the space of a year) and a few words of advice from her coach Richard Quick , she lined up for competition in the hope of grabbing one of the Olympic berths for Sydney. During the American Olympic trials in Indianapolis she confirmed her return to the fray by registering the world's third-fastest time in the 100m butterfly (57.58 sec). At the Sydney games she competed in the 50m freestyle (winning the bronze), the 100m freestyle (bronze again) and the 100m butterfly (even another bronze), the 4x100m relay (gold), and the 4x100m medley (gold).
