In her illustrious career in professional tennis, Chris Evert was the first player to win 1,000 singles matches and was the No.1 ranked player in the world 5 times. A pioneer of the two-handed backhand, in 1974 she set a modern-day record for women by winning 56 straight matches and for the next 13 straight years until 1986, she won at least 1 Grand Slam singles title each year. A steady and rentless baseline player, she was known for her unflappable behaviour on court as she methodically went about winning.
Chris Evert won four consecutive US Open titles between 1975 and 1978. She would win the US Open again in 1980 and 1982. Virtually unbeatable on clay courts, she won the French Open seven times. In 1979 she married British tennis professional John Lloyd. They were divorced and in 1988 she married Andy Mill, a former Olympic skier.

Chris Evert won a total of six U.S. tennis opens, seven French opens and three Wimbledon titles and two Australian opens during her career. Her professionalism attracted media attention, large audiences, and significant prize money to women's tennis during the 1970's and 1980's. Evert served the game of tennis as much off the court as on the court. Her impressive poise during tough mentally taxing matches contrasted sharply with the poor spoiled brat behavior of many of her fellow tennis stars. Notable Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe.
Chris Evert was born on December 21, 1954 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida the second of five children born to Colette and James Evert's five children. The Evert's all played tennis. At age six Chris Evert began spending two to three hours a day and eight extra hours on weekends practicing tennis. She was not strong enough to hit the ball backhand with one arm so she began perfecting her signature two-handed backstroke.
Evert began competing at the age of ten, by her fifteenth birthday sports reporters and fans began giving her their attention. In 1970, she defeated another top ranked player in the Clay Court Tournament and went on to upset Margaret Court, who had just won the Grand Slam. Eventually Evert lost to Nancy Richly in the finals in the finals. At this time, she was still a sixteen-year-old amateur. After graduating from high school in 1972, she had reached the number one ranking and embarked on her domination of women's tennis. From 1973 to 1979 reached the semi-finals or better in 17 of the 19

    Biography
American tennis player who holds seven world championship titles. Nicknamed "Chris America," in 1985 she was named "the Greatest Woman Athlete of the last 25 years by the Women's Sports Foundation. Evert began playing at age five, taught by her tennis pro dad who later became her coach and mentor. At 16 she began the professional circuit, chaperoned by her mother on the world tour until her 18th birthday. The discipline impressed upon her and her five siblings by her conservative parents enabled her to complete high school despite a grueling schedule of training and touring. Trained by her father to never display her emotions on the court, she became known as the "Ice Maiden" for her stoic expression and clarity of purpose. "I always had great killer instinct," she once remarked. "It used to be when I would lose, I couldn't sleep at night." The killer instinct led Evert to a stellar career spanning 18 years, winning an unprecedented 1,309 matches. A six-time winner of the U.S. Open, she moved on to conquer the Wimbledon title three times, followed by two victories in Australia and seven French Opens. Her inbred sense of fair play, coupled with impeccable decorum and humble charm earned her global popularity; crowds stood and cheered even when she lost. When she walked off center court and retired into private life at the U.S. Open in September 1989, she received a five-minute standing ovation.
