Photos See all 18 Name at birth: Christine Marie Evert Chris Evert was a women's tennis champion between 1974 and 1986, famous for her poise on court and her powerful two-fisted backhand. Evert grew up playing tennis with her father in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When she was 15 years old she landed in the spotlight with a win over the top-ranked woman in tennis, Margaret Court . The next year she made it to the semi-finals of the U.S. Open; she lost to Billie Jean King , but Chrissie's skill and maturity on the court made the tenacious teen a crowd favorite. Her cool demeanor on the court earned her the nicknames "Ice Princess" and "Ice Maiden," but her easy charm off the court made her famous beyond the sports pages. She had a two-year romance (1974-76) with tennis champ Jimmy Connors that only heightened her celebrity. Throughout the late '70s Evert was one of the sport's dominant players, and her charisma and a thrilling rivalry with Martina Navratilova helped popularize women's tennis (the two faced each other 80 times; Navratilova ended up with a 43-37 advantage). Retired since 1989, Evert occasionally does on-air commentary for NBC television. She holds 157 singles titles, 8 doubles titles and a career total of 18 Grand Slam singles titles. She won the French Open seven times, the US Open six times, Wimbledon three times and the Australian Open twice.

Other Resources Nicknamed "Little Miss Icicle" for her imperturbable demeanor, Evert lacked the flair of Billie Jean King or Martina Navratilova, but she was a very steady, consistent baseline player who won 157 tournaments, second only to Navratilova, and $8,896,195, third all-time, in just under 18 years as a professional. The daughter of tennis pro Jimmie Evert, who was ranked 11th in the U. S. in 1943, she turned professional on her eighteenth birthday in 1972 after having passed up $50,000 in winnings that year to retain her amateur status. Evert won her first major titles, the Wimbledon and French Open singles, in 1974. She also won at Wimbledon in 1976 and 1981 and was a finalist on five other occasions. Evert tied the record of Molla Mallory and Helen Jacobs by winning the U. S. Open four years in a row, from 1975 through 1978, and she won that title again in 1980 and 1982. She was a finalist at the French Open ten years in a row, from 1973 through 1982, and won the championship in 1974, 1975, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1986. With her Australian Open titles in 1982 and 1984, Evert had a total of 18 grand slim singles championships, third behind Margaret Smith Court and Helen Wills Moody.

Evert, Chris,
byname of CHRISTINE MARIE EVERT, also called (1979-87) CHRIS EVERT LLOYD (b. Dec. 21, 1954, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., U.S.), outstanding American tennis player who dominated the sport in the mid- and late 1970s and remained a major competitor into the late 1980s. Evert was known for her powers of concentration, her controlled backcourt game, and her two-handed backhand, which she learned at an early age against the advice of her father, a tennis instructor. At age 15, she beat top-ranked Margaret Court at a small tournament in 1970. In 1971 Evert became the youngest player to reach the semifinals of the U.S. championship. She remained an amateur until 1972, and by the late 1980s she had earned nearly $9,000,000 as a professional. Evert won the U.S. Open women's singles from 1975 to 1978, making her the first woman since Helen Hull Jacobs to win four consecutive U.S. titles; she also won the U.S. Open in 1980 and 1982. She won the Wimbledon singles in 1974, 1976, and 1981, the French Open singles in 1974, 1975, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1986, and the Australian Open singles in 1982 and 1984, for a total of 18 Grand Slam titles. She was married to fellow tennis professional John Lloyd from 1979 to 1987. She officially retired from the game after her defeat at the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in 1989.
