Z Martina Navratilova Biography Martina Navratilova (born October 18, 1956) is a successful Czech-born American tennis player. She played on the WTA Tour, competing in the singles from 1973 until 1994. She won 18 major singles titles from 1978-1990 (including nine at Wimbledon including six in a row 1982-1987), 167 singles tournaments and 174 doubles tournaments including 31 in the major competitions.
She was born in Prague and grew up in the Krkonose region. When her parents separated she went with her mother to Revnice where she became interested in tennis. Her mother re-married in 1962 and her stepfather, Mirek Navratil, became her first coach. She played in her first junior tournament in 1964 and began working with George Parma. She became a professional player in 1973, reaching the quarter-finals of her first Grand Slam event. In September 1975 she took up permanent residence in the US after the tournament in New York City (she became a US citizen in 1981).
Initially unsuccessful it was not until 1978 that she won her first major title, beating Chris Evert to win the Wimbeldon women's singles. A rigorous training regime finally showed its worth from 1982 when she won fifteen singles tournaments and fourteen doubles in that year and 28 in the following year, just missing a singles Grand Slam. She had an extended and fiercely competitive on-court rivalry with Chris Evert, a clash of contrasting styles that lasted until Evert retired in 1988.

Creative Quotations from . . . Martina Navratilova
(1956-) born on Oct 18 US tennis player. She was one of the most dominating women's tennis players in recent times. Share I came to live in a country I love; some people label me a defector. I have loved men and women in my life; I've been labeled "the bisexual defector." Want to know another secret? I'm even ambidextrous. I don't like labels. Just call me Martina."
I just try to concentrate on concentrating. I think the key is for women not to set any limits. The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else. "Whoever said, "It's not whether you win or lose that counts," probably lost."

Biography
Czechoslovakian-American tennis champion, outstanding with 167 titles, including nine Wimbledon singles. In the summer of 1972 she won the Czech National Championship. She made her first visit to the U.S. in 3/22/1973. Two years later she was ready to defect from her homeland, on 9/05/1975. Her first Wimbledon win was July 1978, the year she became the World No. 1 player. Navratilova became a U.S. citizen 7/20/1981. Early in 1982, she suffered from toxoplasmosis. Born into a tennis-oriented family, she had the models of her grandmother, step-dad and mom as champions or administrators in the game. Spending her childhood in the Krkonose Mountains, she learned to ski as soon as she could walk. When she was five, the family moved to Prague, where she watched her folks play tournaments. She became obsessed with batting a ball against the wall for practice. At eight, she signed to play her first tournament. Off the court, she swam, skied, and played soccer and ice hockey, but nothing interfered with her love of tennis. At 14, she captured her first title, and in 1973, she began her first tour on the circuit. Visiting the U.S., she fell in love with junk food and gained 20 lbs: 5' 8" and over 150 lbs, she failed to win any of the matches. By the following year, she was winning most of them.
