Biography
American athlete who blazed her way up the ranks of Women's Tennis in 1998 at the age of 18. She made a sensational debut in November 1997 with impact for her powerful service and bounding returns. In 1998 she defeated World Champ Martina Hingis twice, getting a taste for winning tournaments. Venus and her 15-month younger sister, Serena are both ranking players, Venus in the Top Ten and Serena in the Top 50 by 1998 and moving ahead. The girls were brought up in a supportive environment to prepare them for such pressures as the media and competition bring to bear during the tennis tours. Their dad Richard has been called both a genius and a racist who is keeping his gifted kids wrapped in the bosom of their family. He groomed his five daughters to play tennis, but it was the two youngest who paid off, with Venus winning $1.2 million in career prizes and Serena already winning $242,000 by the time she was 16. Venus was the fourth of five girls and Serena the youngest. During their early professional days, the girls had a reputation of being combative and confrontational, with the media taking notice of tantrums and boasting. They had to learn to match their talent with professional behavior. Venus at 18 is 6' 1 1/2" tall and 169 lbs. A black Amazon in blue hair beads, she slams the ball with incredible power, a faster serve than any woman in history and faster than many men. Her style has won her a $12 million contract to represent Reebok.

Richard Williams: Venus And Serena's Father Whips The Pros And Makes His Family No.1 In Tennis
Ebony June, 2000 by Kevin Chappell
NEARLY 15 years ago, an unknown father stood on a crumbling tennis court in Compton, Calif., and told his little daughter Venus that she was going to be one of the best tennis players in the world. This was a bold prediction, for the father was a neighborhood tennis coach and he knew that the odds of this happening were astronomical. After all, no Black person had dominated the game of tennis since Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon in 1975, and no Black woman had won a major tournament since Althea Gibson won the U.S. championships and Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958. But as it turned out, the father (aka Richard Williams) knew best. To the consternation of the tennis establishment and the delight of tennis fans, young Venus and her younger sister, Serena, climbed to the top of professional tennis. The journey was capped off last year by Serena's U.S. Open win, in which she beat No. 1-seeded Martina Hingis in straight sets. Now Venus and Serena are the darlings of tennis, ranked in the top 5 in the world, and the Williams familyRichard, his wife Oracene, and his youngest daughters, 19-year-old Venus and Serena, 18is the No. 1 family in tennis, according to Tennis magazine.

    Venus Williams
Tennis Player Born: 17 June 1980 Birthplace: Lynwood, California Best known as: Sister of Serena Williams and five-time winner of Wimbledon Venus Williams dominated women's tennis in 2000, winning singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Sydney Olympics, and winning doubles titles at Wimbledon and Sydney with her younger sister Serena . (Her victory at Wimbledon made her the first black female champion there since Althea Gibson in 1957 and 1958.) Williams was already a famous figure in tennis for her size (6'1"), overpowering strength, and unusual tennis background: she and Serena learned to play on public courts in tough Compton, California, coached by their self-taught father Richard. After her breakthrough 2000 campaign she was named Sportswoman of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine. In 2001 she repeated as Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion (defeating Serena in the U.S. Open finals) and she won again at Wimbledon in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Serena Williams: Venus gave her inferiority complex
Serena Williams has always been known for her sense of fashion both on and off the court and even has her own line of clothing ‘Aneres’ once wanted to be leggy like her sister Venus as she said to Harper’s Bazaar. The Tennis ace will be soon seen in the August issue of the magazine posing in an Eres white swimsuit holding a tennis ball and talks about her insecurities about her body in the early phase of her life as she compared herself to her leggy sister Venus. And it took her a long time to accept that she was different, adding “I was growing up, wanting to be her, wanting to look like her, and I was always fitting in her clothes but its fine. Now I’m obviously good, but it’s a weird thing. Since I don’t look like every other girl, it takes a while to be okay with that. To be different. But different is good.” Serena also revealed her secret to her sexy curvy figure claiming that she works out to avoid looking bulky but at the same time she has never ever practiced dieting in her life, she claims she does Pilates two to three times in a week and practices yoga to keep her slim.

Serena Williams on the April issue cover of Essence Magazine!
Venus loses close match to Clijsters at U.S. Open Sept. 10 Nerves have begun to get the better of Venus in matches, and it was part of the story in Friday's semifinal match against defending champion, Kim Clijsters (who has defeated Venus in their last 4 meetings) . Up 6:4, Venus played a second set tiebreak for the opportunity to close out the match, but served a double fault in the first point and just couldn't regain her composure. In the third set, she broke back from 3:4 down to level the match at 4:4, but lost serve and eventually the match in three sets - 4:6, 7:6(2), 6:4.
Venus was looking to win her third U.S. Open title, last winning in 2001, but it wasn't meant to be this year. Though disappointing, it must also be remembered that Venus had been sidelined from the tennis world for two months with her knee injury. The fact that she competed as well as she did to reach the semifinals this year must be commended and applauded.
