The Deserts in Literature
Desert Solitaire
by Edward Abbey (1927-1989) "This is the most beautiful place on earth," Abbey declared on page one of Desert Solitaire . The place he meant was the slickrock desert of southeastern Utah, the "red dust and the burnt cliffs and the lonely sky - all that which lies beyond the ends of the roads." Desert Solitaire , drawn largely from the pages of a multi-volume journal the author began in 1956 and kept over several seasons as a ranger in Arches National Monument (now a national park), was published "on a dark night in the dead of winter" in 1968. The book later moved the novelist Larry McMurtry to declare Abbey "the Thoreau of the American West," but it was greeted at first with little acclaim and slow sales. Since then, readers have supported the book through a long history of printings that led to what the author declared to be the "new and revised and absolutely terminal edition" brought out by The University of Arizona Press in 1988. It is that twentieth anniversary edition from which our excerpt, from the chapter titled "Terra Incognita: Into the Maze,"

(ABBEY, Edward) Kirk Douglas Writes to Gary Cooper Santa Barbara, Santa Teresa Press, 1992. One of 500 copies of this pamphlet issued as a holiday greeting in 1992 and never formally offered for sale. A humorous but powerful letter written in May, 1961, in which Douglas, who starred in the film adaptation of Abbey's The Brave Cowboy , expresses mock dismay and chagrin at the fact that Cooper "should" have been the star of a movie originally to have been called "The Last Hero." He tells Cooper that the way he recognized Abbey when they first met was that, of all the people getting off the plane, Abbey was the one who looked like Gary Cooper and he even talked like Cooper. And he recounts that his director's first, and only, instructions regarding Douglas' character were to "just try and play this the way Gary Cooper would." Douglas contributes a short afterword to this little edition, remarking on both Cooper and Abbey. Fine in original envelope. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.

an environmental classic:
Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire , first edition
"The desert is... atonal, cruel, clear, neither romantic nor classical, motionless and emotionless at one and the same time... Like death? Perhaps. And perhaps that is why life nowhere appears so brave, so bright, so full of oracle and miracle as in the desert." ABBEY, Edward. Desert Solitaire. A Season in the Wilderness. NY: McGraw-Hill, (1968). Octavo, original brown cloth, original dust jacket. $850. First edition of Abbey's first work of nonfiction; a classic of the environmental movement. Abbey "worked as a park ranger and fire lookout for the National Park Service in the Southwest, developing an intimacy with the region's landscape that was to shape his writing career. Central to this experience was the perspective it afforded on the human presence in the natural environment. Abbey observed both the remnants of ancient Indian cultures and the encroachment of consumer civilization. His book Desert Solitaire (1968), considered by many to be his best, is an extended meditation on the sublime and forbidding wilderness of southeastern Utah and the human incursions into it. He husbanded his extensive knowledge of the region, admitting 'I have written much about a good many places. But the best places of all I have never mentioned.' Abbey's novel

(ABBEY, Edward) Canyonlands Country (n.p.), Four Corners Geol. Soc., 1975. A volume printing the proceedings of the Eighth Field Conference of the society, with a one-page introduction, entitled "Welcome to Canyonlands," by Abbey. The Geological Society is primarily concerned with exploiting the earth and its resources, and the irony of their having had Abbey write their introduction was doubtless lost on the majority of its membership. The advertising scattered throughout the volume, presumably to help pay for its publication, is consistently from oil companies, drillers, "oil field services" companies and the like. Abbey makes a nod toward the need to combine poetry and science "Any good poet," he writes, "in our age at least, must begin with the scientific view of the world; while the scientist must be something of a poet, that is, capable of wonder..." He then argues his guts out for preservation. A near fine copy in illustrated boards, without dust jacket, as issued. Scarce. SOLD All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.

Down the River (Plume) List Price: Price: You Save:
Description
"Be of good cheer," the war-horse Edward Abbey advises, "the military-industrial state will soon collapse." This sparkling book, which takes us up and down rivers and across mountains and deserts, is the perfect antidote to despair. Along the way, Abbey makes time for Thoreau while he takes a hard look at the MX missile system, slated for the American West. "For 23 years now I've been floating rivers. Always downstream, the easy and natural way. The way Huck Finn and Jim did it, LaSalle and Marquette, the mountain men, and Major Powell." "Abbey's the original fly in the ointment. Give him money and prizes. Don't let anything happen to him." Thomas McGuane
