Avant-garde novelist and playwright who represented the outsider in the Japanese literary world of the 1960s and 1970s. Central themes in Abe's works are the loss of identity, alienation and isolation of the individual in a strange world, and the difficulty people have in communicating with one another. In the West Abe is best-known for his novels, such as The Woman in the Dunes (1962) and The Face of Another (1964). "What were you looking at?"
    "A window."
"No, no. I mean what were you looking at through the window?" "Windows... lots of windows. One by one the lights are going off. That's the only instant you really know somebody's there."

Abe (pron. "AH-bay KOH-boh") (1924-1993) stands out dramatically from his contemporaries in postwar Japanese literature. His works bear no resemblence to the subjective, ultra-realistic and autobiographical style that characterizes a great deal of postwar literature in general and postwar Japanese literature in particular. The reason for this, it has become customary to point out, probably lies in his relatively unique upbringing. Abe grew up in Manchuria, or Manchukuo as the Japanese leasehold/puppet state was known at the time. As such he presumably did not develop the deep ties to such concepts as furusato (hometown) and the emperor , both of which play large roles in the works of contemporaries Mishima Yukio and Nobel laureate Oe Kenzaburo. Furthermore, Abe did not undergo formal training in literature as did so many of his contemporaries. Instead he followed in his father's footsteps, studying medicine at Tokyo Imperial University. Unlike another famous medical doctor in Japanese literature, Mori Ogai, Abe did not excel in this field, nor did it seem that he had any particular enthusiasm for a life in medicine. It is said that he was allowed to graduate only on the condition that he never practice medicine. After the war Abe began experimenting with various radical social and artistic theories. Abe joined a small literary/artistic/philosophical group called

Mrs. Abe Neri is the daughter of Abe Kobo. She is an obsterician and a mother of three children. She is now editing the Complete Works of Abe Kobo and preparing his biography.
Kato Koiti made this interview on Octber 27 1996, and Mr. Mark Gibeau volunteered to traslate it in English on April 6 1997.
    On Haniya Yutaka
I am currently researching Abe's early period. Haniya Yutaka , Hanada Kiyoteru, Okamoto Taro and others experimented a great deal back then, I find it very fascinating. I was surprised to discover such an energetic period. I wonder if you have any recollections of that time.
Abe Neri : I don't know anything about that period. I was born in 1954.
Oh yes, that's right. But I recall reading something about how you danced at a party at Haniya's home.
Neri : That was Abe Kobo, not me. My only memories are very fragmented. I am currently preparing a biography on Abe Kobo and last year I received an invitation to speak with Haniya Yutaka. When I went to interview him, I thought, "So this is the room where they had the dance party." I think that it was held in my pre elementary school days.
Ah, so you were still quite young. I was thinking of a dance party somewhere along the lines of "American Graffiti." What kind of a room was it?

However, in 1962 he was expulsed from the party because of critical articles towards JPC, partly as a result of a trip through Hungary, some months before the national uprising in 1956 against Communist rule. Abe supported the independence of Hungary from the Soviet Union. In 1961, Abe and twenty-seven other literary figures declared their opposition to JPC'S Stalinist policies.

Important writers for his own artistic development were Edgar Allan Poe, Samuel Beckett, Rainer Maria Rilke and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. In 1947 Abe published at his own expense a collection of poems. His reputation as a writer Abe established with the novel OWARISHI MICHI NO SHIRUBE NI (1948), about the story of an opium addict. In the 1950s, Abe joined the Japanese Communist Party.
