Book Description The further adventures of "Dr. Gonzo" as he defends the "cucarachas" the Chicanos of East Los Angeles.
Before his mysterious disappearance and probable death in 1971, Oscar Zeta Acosta was famous as a Robin Hood Chicano lawyer and notorious as the real-life model for Hunter S. Thompson's "Dr. Gonzo" a fat, pugnacious attorney with a gargantuan appetite for food, drugs, and life on the edge.
In this exhilarating sequel to The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Acosta takes us behind the front lines of the militant Chicano movement of the late sixties and early seventies, a movement he served both in the courtroom and on the barricades. Here are the brazen games of "chicken" Acosta played against the Anglo legal establishment; battles fought with bombs as well as writs; and a reluctant hero who faces danger not only from the police but from the vatos locos he champions. What emerges is at once an important political document of a genuine popular uprising and a reve

    Oscar Zeta Acosta
Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, 1935-) was a writer, lawyer, and political activist. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised in California's San Joaquin Valley, near Modesto. Because Acosta's father was drafted during World War II , Oscar held much responsibility in helping to take care of the family. As an attorney his activities began in Oakland but it was in East Los Angeles where he gained notoriety, prior to his mysterious disappearance in Mexico in the Spring of 1974.
Acosta is most well known as the author of two of the most important novels of the Chicano Protest Movement, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972), and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973). Both novels are highly acclaimed as major contributions to the Chicano literary renaissance. They are semiautobiographical and relate to Acosta's search for self-identity in the midst of an Anglo society at a time of great social unrest within the Chicano community.
Immediately following high school, at the age of seventeen, Acosta enlisted in the Air Force and was honorably discharged after four years of service. During a tour of service in Latin America, Acosta converted to Protestantism and became a Baptist missionary in a leper colony in Panama, although later, in

Oscar Acosta was born on April 8, 1935, and possibly passed away in 1974 under mysterious circumstances. Various rumours suggested that he was alive, however. The most notable was an anecdote in Paul Perry's Fear and Loathing biography that Rolling Stone received a hospital bill for a broken arm for a patient named Oscar Acosta in 1977 ( RS was unable to trace the bill any farther than the hospital). He started out as an anti-poverty lawyer after passing the bar exam and took his own shot at running for sheriff of Los Angeles County in 1970. A powerful writer and speaker, he wrote two books: The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo and The Revolt of the Cockroach People . A collection of his writing was published in Oscar Acosta: The Uncollected Works in 1996. The new Criterion Edition of FLLV , released in 2003, contains footage of Oscar speaking. Wikipedia has a nice little summary of Oscar's life ; check out the links at the bottom of this page for more information on Oscar.

Alongside these broad, shared themes, Latino literature also reflects the distinct immigration experiences of discrete groups. Mexican American prose tends to reflect social themes, given the migratory pattern of mostly agricultural workers with minimal formal education. The wave of Cuban immigration after the Cuban Revolution in 1959 brings the nostalgic voice of an educated middle class. Nuyoricans, the large contingent of Puerto Rican immigrants in New York, add to the mix their verve and creativity, freely using a mixture of English and Spanish. Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, Dominicans, and other Central and South American immigrants write about the social upheaval in their countries. CONTENT OF THE COLLECTION The majority of Latino Literature is in English, with selected works of particular importance (approximately 25% of the collection) presented in Spanish. The three major components deliver approximately 200 novels and many hundreds of short stories; 20,000 pages of poetry; and more than 450 plays. Authors such as Rudolfo Anaya, Cherrie Moraga, Carlos Morton, Alurista, Virgil Suarez, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Ivan Acosta, Oscar Zeta Acosta, Rolando Hinojosa, Tato Laviera, Lucha Corpi, Luis Valdez, and others are included, along with many others.

TOP REVIEWS FOR COURSES THAT USE THIS BOOK University of Florida: SURVEY OF AM LIT - "Horrible class. I had Mojadidi, and she was very unhelpful. She was a biased teacher and didn't grade based on how you wrote, she graded based on what you wrote (and whether she agreed with you or not). She is extremely liberal, so if you don't swing that way either don't take her class or keep your mouth shut. Going into the final paper I easily had an A, but somehow managed to get a B+, and then she refused to let me see my final paper or describe why I received that grade. All we discussed/wrote about/read in her class either consisted of slavery, racism, how white people are racist against every other race, how other races aren't racist, how America is corrupt, and how Malcolm X was a great American. Very liberally radical and offensive in general, and especially if you're white or proud to be an American. "
