41. Interview: Douglas Adams
The author talks about his love to MAC Computers.
Interview by Rafi Guroian In the spirit of recent events, MacReactor asked Douglas Adams if he'd like to do an interview with us, and he agreed. I've got to admit that brainstorming questions to ask Douglas Adams is kind of like imagining how you might act should you be given a million dollars. Do you commit to the obvious and go on a shopping spree, or do you get creative? Well, we tried to do both. We asked Mr. Adams the obligatory questions about his new game as well as got a little creative. Did you ever know the man likes to Scuba dive? Or perhaps that he's a huge fan of Sushi? Well, you do now. So, without further ado, our interview with Mr. Douglas Adams.
MacReactor: Here we are and Starship Titanic is finally coming to not just our platform, but your platform. How long have you been a Mac user (or an Apple customer for that matter)? DA: I bought my first Mac the very day the first Mac came out. I've used Macs (many, many of them, even a PB5300...) ever since. We approached them. I'd enjoyed doing the Hitchhiker Game, which was a conversation based text-only game. Those games disappeared in the mid eighties with the coming of graphics, only the graphics weren't any good! I was waiting for the opportunity to do a game that would incorporate a conversation-based interaction in a beautifully designed graphics game. How did you create Starship Titanic's basic premise? Did the story evolve over time or did you have a pretty clear idea of what you wanted to do?

Douglas Adams Authors Main Douglas N. Adams Douglas Adams was born on March 11, 1952 in Cambridge, England. Little is known about how much of a nuisance he might have been to his elementary school teachers, but his refined sense of humor was already alive when he graduated from Cambridge's St. John's College , where he was a member of the " Footlights Club ," a starting pad for many of Britain's comics. His performances on stage brought him to working for radio shows, which eventually led to the birth of the famous "Hitchhiker's Guide" in 1978, when he and a friend persuaded BBC 4 to let him do a science-fiction series. In the meantime he had also worked for " Monthy Python " and was a script editor for the " Doctor Who " TV show.

Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge, England, in 1952. He was educated at Cambridge University, and was active in the Footlights Dramatic Club , a springboard for many British comics. At least some of the this time was spent hitchhiking across Europe because in 1971 he found himself in Innsbruck, Austria, lying in a field drunk thinking how much better life would be if there was a guide to hitchhiking across the galaxy. Adams graduated in 1974, and eventually hooked up with producer Simony Brett, leading to the debut of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio in 1978. Adams turned The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy into a book in 1979, followed by sequels The Restaurant at the End of the Universe in 1980 and Life, the Universe and Everything in 1982 , making it a trilogy. Because Adams had incredibly great taste, he teamed up with Steve Meretzkey to turn his work into interactive fiction, and in 1984 Infocom released The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . Another sequel to the trilogy

At last in paperback in one complete volume, here are the five classic novels from Douglas Adams’s beloved Hitchiker series. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Seconds before the Earth is demolished for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is saved by Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised Guide . Together they stick out their thumbs to the stars and begin a wild journey through time and space. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe Facing annihilation at the hands of warmongers is a curious time to crave tea. It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his comrades as they hurtle across the galaxy in a desperate search for a place to eat.

48. Our Tribute To Douglas Adams
Tribute to the science fiction author, who died at the age of 49.
Home Editorial About Us Reviews ... April Edition A Terrible Stupid Mistake
Oliver Moor Douglas Adams has been taken from us at forty-nine.
I never knew him, of course. The first time I heard of him was about twenty years ago. He was being interviewed by LBC Radio: a man with an enthusiastic, laughing voice was talking about how he'd been lying in a field looking at the stars, thinking that someone ought to write a guidebook for the Galaxy, which sounded intriguing, but at the age of twelve many ideas seemed intriguing, and I didn't give it much more of a thought. Then, two years later, I either was given, or found, a copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy . I read it till it fell apart. That in itself isn't particularly unusual- it's been the fate of several of my books - but the Guide was different. Every time it seemed fresh. Everything about it - from the descriptions of the excitingly chunky controls of the Starship Heart of Gold, to the subliminal signal, transmitted when under extreme stress, indicating exactly how far one is from one's birthplace - seemed incredibly original and in some mad way entirely believable (I believed the signal idea for years).
And of course it was funny. No, not funny. It was hysterical. Absurd.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 's phenomenal success sent the book straight to Number One in the UK Bestseller List and in 1984 Douglas Adams became the youngest author to be awarded a Golden Pan. He won a further two (a rare feat), and was nominated - though not selected - for the first Best of Young British Novelists awards.
