Robert Adam's Vision of Edinburgh
This is an interactive multimedia
of designs for buildings by the Scottish Architect
Robert Adam 1728 - 1792 Robert Adam was recognised in his own time as the great architectural genius. This site records buildings in Edinburgh that were constructed during Adam's lifetime, buildings that were constructed but which were in the process or subsequently modified, buildings that are now destroyed, and designs for buildings that only ever existed on paper. Many of these latter designs by Adam are largely unknown. They are none-the-less great works of architecture. They extend further the classical architectural language that Robert Adam developed, that he translated and modified with great invention, and that was adopted so readily by Edinburgh for the development of its New Town. It is hoped that this web site will provide a glimpse of the vision he had for his home city, A new Internet based catalogue system provides the vehicle for accessing these records, which include introductory essays referencing the work of many experts on Adam, along with computer visualisations and photographs with related notes and captions.

The building of Culzean Castle.
Robert Adam, Architect, 1728 - 1792 Two drawings, above and left;
Sketches for Culzean Castle by Robert Adam, now in the Soane Museum, London. On a cliff edge overlooking the Firth of Clyde about 15 miles south of Ayr in South West Scotland, Culzean was originally a rambling fortified L-shaped tower house. It had been built by the Kennedy family in the late 1500's, and was already nearly 200 years old when Sir Thomas Kennedy succeeded to the title Earl of Cassilis in 1762. Rather than move from his outdated and old-fashioned boyhood home to Cassilis House, he chose to stay put, and set about repairs and renovations to make it more comfortable. But it was his brother David (Thomas died in 1775 and he succeeded to the title) who decided to be more thorough and drastic. He commissioned the foremost architect of the time, Robert Adam, to transform Culzean from a dowdy fortress to a grand, romantic and fashionable castle.

In 1761, Robert Adam and William Chambers, were jointly appointed "Architects of the King’s Works", with Adam having specific responsibility for Scotland. Adam resigned from this post in 1768, on his election as an MP, prior to receiving any commissions for a major public building. William Chambers was to go on to receive the major public commission for the design of Somerset House in 1776. Before that, in September 1769, Robert Adam, along with his brother James, had received the commission for the design of Register House. The then Lord Clerk Register, Lord Frederick Campbell, was a friend of Robert Adam who had worked on alterations to Campbell's house at Ardincaple, Dunbartonshire, and other Trustees were patrons or supporters of Adam. The commission gave Adam the opportunity to design a monumental public building of national importance. Work on the new building began in 1773 with the digging of the foundations. However, the scheme was reduced on financial grounds, and when the foundation stone was laid in 1774 only the south range, rotunda and the front half of the east and west ranges from the 1771 scheme were proposed for immediate construction. The building was, however, built to allow for its extension to the original dimensions if additional funding became available. The structure is almost entirely of either stone (from the local Craigleith and Ravelston quarries) or brick making the building fireproof and providing stability for the storage of heavy record volumes. This meant that the building was expensive and, despite its less elaborate form and restrained decoration, the money made available was insufficient even to allow construction of Adam’s reduced design. Work was suspended at the end of 1778 and the roofless shell of the building stood empty as "the most expensive pigeon house in Europe." In 1785, a further government grant allowed work to recommence, with the building being ready for occupation by the end of 1788.

Robert Adam (1728-1792)
Robert Adam. William Chambers In London, the Adams Brothers designed the Adelphi scheme (1768-1772), built in Westminster and based on a Thames-side terrace with a parallel row closer to the Strand, with a ladder of side streets between. It was largely demolished in the 1930s. A few remain, in John Adam Street, Robert Street and so forth, among which is the Royal Society of Arts, with an elegant Ionic frontage. The south and east sides of Fitzroy Square are also theirs. On his death in 1792, in his house in Albemarle Street, he was honoured with a burial in Westminster Abbey. Adelphi Terrace. A few of Robert Adam's town houses remain, including 20 Portman Square, 20 St James's Square, and Chandos House in Queen Anne Street. The majority of his work was on large country houses, usually altering existing ones rather than starting from scratch, and partly for this reason, he is particularly known today for his opulent and elegant interiors rather than exteriors. Around London we may mention Kenwood House , home of the Iveagh Collection of paintings, Osterley Park, and Syon House (near Kew). A large collection of drawings and sketches of his designs are in the collection of the
