  • ASIN: Amazon.com Blame it on taxes. According to SFWA Grand Master Brian Aldiss, that's the main reason he sold the movie rights to the Pinocchio-android tale "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" to Stanley Kubrick back in 1982. Bound here along with two followup short stories and nine unrelated short pieces from more recent years, "Supertoys" was to be the source material for Kubrick's last movie. Of course, Kubrick died, and then Steven Spielberg inherited the rights, intending to follow through on Kubrick's original vision. In fairness, Aldiss has never seen his original storynor the two pieces added later, "Supertoys When Winter Comes" and "Supertoys in Other Seasons"as a Pinocchio fable at all. As he recounts in the wry, revealing foreword to this collection, "I could not or would not see the parallels between David, my five-year-old android, and the wooden creature who becomes human.... Never consciously rewrite old fairy stories." But the interpretation of the stubbornly eccentric Kubrick prevailed until Aldiss was "wheeled out of the picture."

Brian W. Aldiss Profiled by Galen Strickland British novelist, critic, essayist, poet, and short story writer, including both SF and mainstream themes. Following his World War 2 service in the Royal Signal Corps in Burma and Sumatra he took a position as an assistant in an Oxford bookshop. His first writings were for a booksellers trade publication and his first SF sale came in 1954 with "Criminal Record" in Science Fantasy . Following an impressive series of short stories throughout the latter half of the decade, he was honored as the most promising new author at the World Science Fiction Convention of 1959, although there were many established writers in the SF community who felt his work was not scientific enough to merit such an award. Certainly, much of Aldiss' work was more literary than was the norm for the genre, and thus can be seen as a precursor to the New Wave movement of the mid-to-late '60s. His first novel, and still one of his best, 1958's Non-Stop (variant US title - Starship ), displays a unique perspective on the "generational starship" theme. 1961 proved to be a year in which SF embraced the sexual nature of man, with Aldiss'
