      Dorothy Allison
      Dorothy Allison is the author of Bastard Out of Carolina , a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award, a recipient of the American Library Association Award for Lesbian and Gay Writing and which became a film starring Jennifer Jason Leigh (1996). Her novel, Cavedweller (Dutton, 1998) was a national bestseller, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, the winner of the 1998 Lambda Literary Award for fiction and a finalist for the Lillian Smith Prize. Cavedweller has also been adapted for the stage and made into a movie starring Kyra Sedgwick (2004). Allison has written a memoir Two or Three Things I Know for Sure (Dutton, 1995) and the poetry chapbook The Women Who Hate Me

    Allison, Dorothy E. (b. 1949) Dorothy Allison refuses to write didactic or romantic illustrations of the lesbian experience, focusing instead on the sheer survival of her lesbian characters in the hostile environment of Southern working-class families. Allison was born in 1949 in Greenville, South Carolina, the setting for her first collection of short stories, Trash (1988), and her highly acclaimed novel, Bastard Out of Carolina (1992).
