Occupation Historian Stephen Edward Ambrose (January 10, 1936 – October 13, 2002) was an American historian and biographer of U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon . He was a long time professor of history at the University of New Orleans and the author of many best selling volumes of American popular history . Beginning late in his life and continuing after his death, however, many reports and evidence have continued to surface documenting long time patterns of plagiarism, falsification, and inaccuracies in many of his published writings and other work. In response to one of the early reports, Ambrose said he was not "out there stealing other people's writings."

Stephen E. Ambrose, the best-selling author of D-Day and the distinguished biographer of Richard Nixon and Dwight D. Eisenhower, has now written the definitive account of the most momentous expedition in American history Lewis and Clark's pioneering journey across the North American continent from the Mississippi to the Pacific, carried out under the personal direction of President Thomas Jefferson. In UNDAUNTED COURAGE: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West Above all, however, UNDAUNTED COURAGE is a grand, colorful narrative of heart-stopping adventure and wondrous discovery, in which Ambrose conveys a vivid sense of what western North America was like before its settlement by European-Americans, as seen through the eyes of the first white man to explore it. As Ambrose puts it, "Lewis was able, through his writing, to take us, two centuries later, to the unexplored Missouri River, Rocky Mountain, and Oregon wilderness country of 1804-6, to meet Indian tribes untouched by European influence, to paint their portraits in words that capture the economic, political, and social conditions of their lives, along with their vibrancy, savagery, beliefs, habits, manners, and customs in a way never since surpassed and seldom matched. The journals he wrote are among his greatest achievements and constitute a priceless gift to the American people. . . . "

Ambrose, Stephen E. To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian
Naval War College Review Spring, 2005 by B. Mitchell Simpson, III
The United States is the richest and most powerful country in the world. Yet over two hundred years ago it began as thirteen colonies at the edge of a continental wilderness. Stephen Ambrose, an eminent historian and skilled writer, has used this short, readable book to explain how the United States made this amazing transformation. He attributes its success as a nation to the American spirit. The American spirit originated with the founding fathers and was further developed by presidents Andrew Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is based on the notions of justice, equality, and the rule of law and fundamental fairness, and embraces the ability to recognize and correct the ills of society. At home the American spirit has been the driving force behind the U.S. Constitution, civil rights, women's rights, the rights of Native Americans, the denouncing of imperialism, the end of racial segregation, and concern for the environment. Abroad, it has brought democracy to former enemies.
