Yehuda Amichai
Yehuda Amichai is one of the leading contemporary Hebrew poets. His contribution extends beyond his own literary achievements to an influence that helped create a modern Israeli poetry . Born in Germany to a religiously observant family, Amichai and his family emigrated to Eretz Yisrael in 1935, living briefly in Petach Tikvah before settling in Jerusalem . In World War II he fought with the Jewish Brigade of the British Army, and upon his discharge in 1946, he joined the Palmach . During the War of Independence he fought in the Negev, on the southern front. Following the war, Amichai attended Hebrew University, studying Biblical texts and Hebrew literature, and then taught in secondary schools. Amichai's first volume of poetry, Achshav Uve-Yamim HaAharim Amichai's poetry spans a range of emotions, from laughter to sadness to self-mockery. His work emphasizes the individual who, although conscious and integrally part of the collective experience, ultimately views the world through his personal lens. This individual perspective evinces a candid, honest approach to the outside world. Amichai's canon is also impressive for the volume of work it encompasses, and many individual books of poetry appeared in rapid succession, as well as

Yehuda Amichai
Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies Nominated many times for the Nobel Prize for Literature, Yehuda Amichai (1924 - 2000) was often considered the national poet of Israel for his generation. Many critics consider his final work, a collection of poetry titled "Open Closed Open", to be Amichai's finest work. His poetry, which portrays life in modern Israel as life with war and insecurity while simultaneouslyaddressing the everyday human issues of any Western society, has been translated into 37 languages. Born in Germany, Immigrated to Israel On May 3, 1924, in Würzburg in the Bavarian region of Germany, Yehuda Amichai was born to Orthodox Jewish merchants whose ancestors had lived there since the Middle Ages. His original last name was Pfeuffer, but when the family immigrated to Palestine in 1936 to escape the Nazis, his parents changed their surname to Amichai (Hebrew for "my people lives"). They finally settled in Israel, having avoided the Holocaust that killed more than 6 million Jews. From his early childhood, Amichai studied Hebrew and later attended religious schools that propounded the Orthodox faith. Once the family moved to Jerusalem, by which time he was

The first part goes on twisting at some other place like a snake cut in two. The passing years have calmed me and brought healing to my heart and rest to my eyes. SUMMARY In poems marked by tenderness and mischief, humanity and humor, Yehuda Amichai breaks open the grand diction of revered Jewish verses and casts the light of his own experi-ence upon them. Here he tells of history, a nation, the self, love, and resurrection. Amichai's last volume is one of medi-tation and hope, and stands as a testament to one of Israel's greatest poets.
