A Great Lyric Poet I have not read this entire volume, so my comments are of limited value, but the categorization of Apollinaire as a surrealist in the two other reviews is misleading. Apollinaire coined the term "surreal" in 1917 to describe "Parade," a ballet on which Satie, Diaghilev, Massine, Picasso, and Cocteau collaborated. Apollinaire died the next year, and surrealism did not take programmatic form until Andre Breton published the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924. Apollinaire's association with cubism was more long-lasting and significant: he was one of Picasso's closest friends and among the most significant critical champions of cubism.

Nov. 9, 1918, Paris), poet who in his short life took part in all the avant-garde movements that flourished in French literary and artistic circles at the beginning of the 20th century and who helped to direct poetry into unexplored channels. The son of a Polish Picasso; he introduced his contemporaries to Henri Rousseau's paintings and to African sculpture; and with Picasso, he applied himself to the task of defining the principles of a Cubist aesthetic in literature as well as painting. His Peintures cubistes appeared in 1913 ( Cubist Painters His first volume, L' Enchanteur pourrissant (1909; "The Rotting Magician"), is a strange dialogue in poetic prose between the magician Merlin and the nymph Viviane. In the following year a collection of vivid stories, some whimsical and some wildly fantastic, appeared under the title (1910; "The Heresiarch and Co."). Then came

Apollinaire, Guillaume
WRITER, POET, ART CRITIC (FRANCE) BORN 31 Aug 1880, Roma - DIED 9 Nov 1918, Paris: Boulevard Saint-Germain
REAL NAME Kotrowitski, Wilhelm Appolinaris de
GRAVE LOCATION Paris: Pre Lachaise , Rue du Repos 16 (division 86)
Guillaume tried to keep his origin a secret, but he was born in Rome as the illigitimate son of Angelica de Kostrowitzky, an aristocratic woman from Poland, who was an ardent gambler. He was educated in Monaco, Cannes and Nice, assuming an identity as a prince from Russia.
Around 1900 he settled in Paris, where he worked for a bank and contributed to magazines like "La Revue Blanche" and "Mercure the France", before starting his own magazine "Le Festin d'Esope". The painter Marie Laurencin became his mistress and he befriended Picasso and Derain. In 1901-1902 he worked as a tutor in Germany.
Back in France he supported modern painting and arranged the first meeting between Picasso and Braque. In 1909 he published his first prose work, "Lnchanteur pourissant", illustrated by Derain.
In September 1911 he was imprisoned for a week because he was suspected of stealing the Mona Lisa. He was innocent. His volume of poetry "Alcools" attracted attention when it was published in 1913. He published a book on cubism, but immediately afterwards he switched to Orphism, a painting concept invented by himself.
