The Golden Ass
, also known by the alternative title, The Metamorphoses , is one of the greatest fantasies of the world . The latter name, The Metamorphoses , is found in the extant manuscripts, but Augustine, who studied some two centuries later at Madauros (as well as at Carthage), says that Apuleius called his work Asinus aureus or The Golden Ass, which name I shall use hereafter (the word 'golden' in this context denotes "a quality of excellence and admirability" rather than "the sense of being fashioned from gold"). Apuleius informs us that he is adapting a Greek story. This is supposed by many scholars to have been a story possibly by the Greek author Lucius of Patrae. This text is now lost, though Lucios or the Ass ) thought to be an abridgement of Lucius of Patrae's tale by Lucian, a Greek satirist and near-contemporary of Apuleius, still exists. However, the splendour of the

The plot revolves around the protagonist's curiosity ( curiositas ) and insatiable desire to see and practice magic. While trying to perform a spell to transform into a bird , he accidentally gets transformed into an ass . This leads to a long journey, literal and metaphorical, filled with

Apuleius' The Golden Ass
Apuleius was a North African Roman citizen of the second century A.D.; he was a pagan. He firmly believed that his worship of the goddess Isis was valid pursuit of the One True Faith . In his classic picaresque adventure, The Golden Tale of the Ass (aka The Golden Ass ), Apuleius contrived to present a comic odyssey with a moral purpose designed to convince readers of Isis' value as a goddess deserving of devotion. All odysseys lead to home eventually. In The Golden Ass, Apuleius designs a spiritual odyssey for his hero, the man-turned-ass Lucius; all of Lucius' beastly travails lead, eventually, to the homecoming of its hero into "the mindful love of the Goddess" (248): "O Lucius, what a happy and blessed man are you, whom the august deity has selected for such direct honours . . . the day that you have so constantly desired is come" (248). An analysis of The Golden Ass must begin with an acceptance of the sincerity and legitimacy of Apuleius' pagan beliefs. These are integral to his worldview and literary orientation. The Golden Ass was not intended solely for an audience of like-thinking Isis worshippers. It was read and clearly understood by the society of cosmopolitan and small-city citizens who populated the

    Abstract
In the middle of the second century A.D., Apuleius was accused of magic. This dissertation offers an essentially new view of how the trial originated, and a new view of the speech which Apuleius gave on the occasion. It points out that there is no reason to distrust the evidence of the Apology . The widespread view that Apuleius misrepresents the accusation lodged against him has no real support: nowhere has Apuleius been caught in an untruth; his principle accuser was a rash, convicted perjurer, his accusation against Apuleius was perjured, and it seems unlikely that a perjured accusation required a perjured response. Further, the history of classical stenography, plus evidence provided by Apuleius himself, indicates that the Apology would have been transcribed by stenographers when delivered, making it probable that we possess in the

Apuleius Clipart.com zSB(3,3) Definition: Lucius Apuleius was a philosopher and rhetorician tried for using magic to win an older, wealthy bride, but he's better known for his novel about the mysteries of Isis, the tale of Cupid and Psyche , and the semi-biographical misadventures of its hero, Lucius. Apuleius was born in about 124, in Madauros, Numidia, received his education in Carthage and Athens, and then traveled around the Mediterranean learning about religious mystery rites. In 158 he delivered a speech recorded as Apologia Apuleii The Apology of Apuleius ' in the multicultural town of Sabratha, Tripolitania (modern Libya), as a defense against the charge of using magic to win a wealthy older bride, Pudentilla. Lucius, in his Apology, provides a glimpse into second century Roman law, the economic and social conditions of Roman North Africa, and the attitude towards magic. Apuleius died in about 174 A.D., having written his novel, known as either

Awards The Golden Ass (Metamorphosis) A novel by Apuleius Apuleius's Golden Ass is a unique, entertaining, and thoroughly readable Latin novelthe only work of fiction in Latin to have survived from antiquity. It tells the story of the hero Lucius, whose curiosity and fascination for sex and magic results in his transformation into an ass. After suffering a series of trials and humiliations, he is ultimately returned to human shape by the kindness of the goddess Isis. Simultaneously a blend of romantic adventure, fable, and religious testament, The Golden Ass is one of the truly seminal works of European literature, of intrinsic interest as a novel in its own right, and one of the earliest examples of the picaresque. This is the same colonia where Saint Augustine later received part of his early education, and, though located well away from the Romanized coast, is today the site of some pristine Roman ruins. Details regarding his life come mostly from his defense speech (see below) and a work entitled "Florida," which consists of snippets taken from some of his best speeches. Apuleius inherited a substantial fortune from his father, a provincial magistrate. Apuleius studied with a master at
