Anthropological SF novel surrounding the investigation by a woman scientist of the alien culture on a planet in the Sigma Draconis system. The main character, an anthropologist, somehow manages to keep herself alive among challenging circumstances, and finds the right informant to learn about a pre-industrial culture on a wildly beautiful and unspoiled planet. Arnason's writing is genial and comforting. She has a knack for immediacyit feels like the protagonist is a close friend imparting an adventure. Dialogue is snappy yet meticulous. The plot is strong and maintains stamina. This is sci-fi with its roots in an eco/feminist perspective similar to Le Guin or Tepper. All of the above and a page turner too! excellent story telling Eleanor Arnason is a gifted writer, of whom, I am sure we will

"faithful troglodytes brought us baked apples and hot wine"
from "The House by the Sea" by Eleanor Arnason,
published originally in Orbit 16 Some relevant quotations:
There'd been a thunderstorm, and my troglodytes had been nervous, padding restlessly around the house, their silver-grey fur standing on end . . . . The new settlers and the city dwellers don't believe the troglodytes are psychic, but we who belong to the old families know they are . . . . My faithful troglodytes brought us baked apples and hot wine . . . . Warmed by it, we embraced, and my troglodyte musicians played water drums and chimes . . . . But troglodytes are a peaceful folk, which is why they have disappeared from most parts of the planet. They survive only where there are old houses, and members of the old families able to protect them . . . . My troglodytes brought me more brandy and made soft growling sounds which were intended to reassure and comfort me.
The illustration is by Bob Bitzan, and reproduced with his permission. Bob originally drew this after having a dream that one of the charming Troglodytes from this story had come up to him and offered him some wine. The dream was (presumably) inspired by reading the story before bed.

    Description
For half a century, Earth has been on the brink of total war with an implacable alien race. Biologist Anna Perez is the first to discover the truth-the hwarhath have segregated their society strictly along gender lines, to prevent the warlike males from harming women and children. In their eyes, humans are a dishonorable and barbaric race who may require extermination...

A little too vague I'm a 'hard sci-fi' fan but this book still had some qualities that I enjoyed. For instance, the alien culture was well thought-out and had real depth. However, as a man, I have to admit, all of the male bashing was a little over the top. Grnated, even though the alien men were supposed to be so dangerous that they weren't even allowed around women or children, they were never actually depicted raving like lunatics and in fact were extremely well-behaved. It's possible I completely misintrepreted the author's meaning, for all I know, she wanted to show that the aline men were only perceived as dangerous but weren't really any more than males of any other species.

    Woman of the Iron People
Eleanor Arnason December 1991 Paperback From Publishers Weekly In this excellent, anthropologically oriented SF tale, Li Lixia is one of eight field anthropologists set down on Sigma Draconis II after the first starship from Earth detects pre-industrial intelligent life there. She experiences several of the cultures of the humanoid people of the planet as she travels with Nia, a female exile of the Iron People. Arnason ( Daughter of the Bear King ) introduces Nia and her way of life, then brings in Lixia and, gradually, includes others of the starship's exploratory team. While removed from the starship, the anthropologists remain in contact with it as they all struggle with the question of whether their active intervention will help or harm those whom they encounter. As in life, no clear answers are offered. With its strong prose, meticulously detailed cultures and...

Featured Book Nebula Awards Weekend Awards for excellence in genre-themed writing and dramatic media. The Nebula Awards ® are voted on, and presented by, active members of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc. Founded as the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1965 by Damon Knight, the organization began with a charter membership of 78 writers; it now has over 1,500 members, among them many of the leading writers of science fiction and fantasy. Lloyd Biggle, Jr., the SFWA’s first secretary-treasurer, originally proposed in 1965 that the organization publish an annual anthology of the best stories of the year. This notion, according to Damon Knight in his introduction to Nebula Award Stories: 1965 (Doubleday, 1966) “rapidly grew into an annual ballot of SFWA’s members to choose the best stories, and an annual awards banquet.” Since 1965, the Nebula Awards have been given each year for the best novel, novella, novelette, and short story eligible for that year’s award. The Award for Best Script was added in 2000. An anthology including the winning pieces of short fiction and several runners-up is also published every year. The Nebula Awards® Banquet, which takes place each spring, is attended by many writers and editors and is preceded by meetings and panel discussions.
