edit Context of his mission
Mathew has been the subject of criticism from the Continental Old Catholics who claim that Mathew obtained his consecration to the historic episcopate in 1908 through deception. The consecration of Mathew as a missionary bishop for England has to be set in the context of La Succession apostolique dans l’Église anglicane (1894) in which some Old Catholics within the Union of Utrecht questioned the validity of Anglican orders and Apostolicae Curae issued (1896) by Pope Leo XIII which concluded that Anglican orders were so lacking in correct intention that they were in effect null and void.

Although remembered now for his elegantly argued critical essays, Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) began his career as a poet, winning early recognition as a student at the Rugby School where his father, Thomas Arnold, had earned national acclaim as a strict and innovative headmaster. Arnold also studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. In 1844, after completing his undergraduate degree at Oxford, he returned to Rugby as a teacher of classics. After marrying in 1851, Arnold began work as a government school inspector, a grueling position which nonetheless afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout England and the Continent. Throughout his thirty-five years in this position Arnold developed an interest in education, an interest which fed into both his critical works and his poetry. Empedocles on Etna (1852) and Poems (1853) established Arnold's reputation as a poet and in 1857 he was offered a position, which he accepted and held until 1867, as Professor of Poetry at Oxford. Arnold became the first professor to lecture in English rather than Latin. During this time Arnold wrote the bulk of his most famous critical works

Hawley examines Kingsley as natural theologian and his views on the “meaning” of nature. He discusses Kingsley’s attempt to bridge the ever widening gap between the claims of science and religion and to establish a vocabulary that would be intelligible to and supportive of both fields. In this respect he provides a comparison of Kingsley’s views on the theological beliefs of and the search for meaning in Arnold, Huxley, and Darwin. Kingsley’s aim, according to Hawley, “was to circumvent fears and cynicism, and to move his readers into a world of scientific endeavor and Christian cooperation. In choosing the commitment of faith over strict empiricism he became for many, in an age of increasing dichotomy between the realms of science and religion, a model of a Christian who hoped that the truths of both would ultimately coalesce” (479). T HE sea is calm to-night,
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanch'd land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
        The sea of faith

Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furl'd.
        But now I only hear
        Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
        Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

Matthew Arnold as a Literary Critic
by S. N. Radhika Lakshmi Bookshop English Literature Matthew Arnold York Notes ... GCSE Books Introduction: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), the Victorian poet and critic, was 'the first modern critic' [1], and could be called 'the critic's critic', being a champion not only of great poetry, but of literary criticism itself. The purpose of literary criticism, in his view, was 'to know the best that is known and thought in the world, and by in its turn making this known, to create a current of true and fresh ideas', and he has influenced a whole school of critics including new critics such as T. S. Eliot, F. R. Leavis, and Allen Tate. He was the founder of the sociological school of criticism, and through his touchstone method introduced scientific objectivity to critical evaluation by providing comparison and analysis as the two primary tools of criticism. Arnold's evaluations of the Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, and Keats are landmarks in descriptive criticism, and as a poet-critic he occupies an eminent position in the rich galaxy of poet-critics of English literature.

MATTHEW, ARNOLD(1822-1888). Matthew Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold, who was a noted and innovative headmaster of Rugby school. Matthew Arnold studied at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford. After graduating he returned to Rugby for a short time to teaching classics In 1851 he married and after this he began work as a schools inspector. This was a demanding job but enabled him to travel widely throughout the UK and Europe.
His early poetic works included Empedocles on Etna(1852) and Poems(1853) these established his reputation as a poet. In 1857 he was appointed to be professor of poetry at Oxford University a post he held for ten years. He was the first professor to lecture in English rather than Latin. During his time as professor of poetry at Oxford Matthew produced many essays of literary criticism such as “On Translating Homer”(1861 and 1862), “On the Study of Celtic Literature”(1867), and “Essays in Celtic Literature”
Matthew Arnold’s writings, to some extent characterized many of the Victorian beliefs with regard to religious faith and morality. However one significant development in his poetry was that he shared with great clarity his own inner feelings. This poetic transparency has had an influence on many other poets such as W.B.Yeats and even Sylvia Plath.

    Matthew Arnold
The Jesus Seminar* (This paper, including documentation, is available in pdf "Arnold’s biblical criticism," says Ruth apRoberts in Arnold and God , "may be his best literary criticism." It is, without doubt, his most vulnerable criticism, as it concerns a body of literature that has been subject to unceasing critical scrutiny of such depth and detail and by so numerous a band of scholars, as no other literature has had to endure. Despite this vulnerability or rather because of it, we might find that Arnold’s biblical criticism best reveals his strength as a critic. Unfortunately, it has also been his most neglected criticism. Owen Chadwick, in The Victorian Church , correctly observes that "few Victorian churchmen were attracted to his proposals," perceiving them merely as a religion of aesthetics or marking a halfway position on the road to agnosticism. Ironically, agnostics regarded Arnold’s efforts as a vain attempt to redeem religion by cloaking it in the prestige of science. Arnold’s work has suffered even further neglect, as apRoberts notes, "because of the nervousness of literary academicians in approaching the Bible and because of the nervousness of the theological establishment in dealing with nonsupernaturalists like Arnold." We may locate Arnold’s biblical criticism somewhere between the religious and the modern secular approach, and there "between two worlds" we find, if not the very best of both, at least
