Kaedrin's Guide to Isaac Asimov
Isaac Asimov is one of the cornerstones of the Science Fiction genre. Yes, a cornerstone. He's also one of the world's most prolific writers, with over 500 books, fiction and non-fiction, credited to his name. I'm going to focus more on his Science Fiction here, specifically his Robot, Empire, and Foundations series, which present a kind of history of the future in which man colonizes space.. I highly recommend reading these series in their proper chronological order (they are listed in the correct order on this page). I've also included a miscellaneous section for various other books that aren't part of the series and I hope to expand this section with links and other articles.
Updated 4.13.03 : Added reviews for the Second Foundation trilogy (written by Gregory Beneford, Greg Bear, and David Brin) and also did some maintenance type things... This guide is due for a much needed updating, so maybe I'll be revising some of the pages as well as writing some new features...

Note: I see that some of these novels are now out of print (like The End of Eternity and Robots and Empire ), which is a shame because some of them are really excellent novels. I recommend checking to see if Amazon can get you a copy (they usually have used sellers as well) or maybe making the journey to *gasp* the local library to get the important novels.

The Reagan Doctrine
by Isaac Asimov
from The Austin American-Statesman , May 10, 1981
Some time ago, Ronald Reagan pointed out that one couldn't trust the Soviet government because the Soviets didn't believe in God or in an afterlife and therefore had no reason to behave honorably, but would be willing to lie and cheat and do all sorts of wicked things to aid their cause. Naturally, I firmly believe that the president of the United States knows what he is talking about, so I've done my very best to puzzle out the meaning of that statement. Let me begin by presenting this "Reagan Doctrine" (using the term with all possible respect): "No one who disbelieves in God and in an afterlife can possibly be trusted." If this is true (and it must be if the president says so), then people are just naturally dishonest and crooked and downright rotten. In order to keep them from lying and cheating every time they open their mouths, they must be bribed or scared out of doing so. They have to be told and made to believe that if they tell the truth and do the right thing and behave themselves, they will go to heaven and get to plunk a harp and wear the latest design in halos. They must also be told and made to believe that if they lie and steal and run around with the opposite sex, they are going to hell and will roast over a brimstone fire forever. It's a little depressing, if you come to think of it. By the Reagan Doctrine, there is no such thing as a person who keeps his word just because he has a sense of honor. No one tells the truth just because he thinks that it is the decent thing to do. No one is kind because he feels sympathy for others, or treats others decently because he likes the kind of world in which decency exists.

28. Isaac Asimov Interview
Done in 1988 by a Polish fan, an interesting insight to Asimov.

DR ISAAC ASIMOV TALKS WITH SLAWEK WOJTOWICZ
Version franaise
Po polsku SW: If you ask any SF fan in Poland "who is Isaac Asimov?" he or she will answer without any hesitation - "one of the greatest SF writers in the World". You might be surprised to learn that you are so famous in a country where only a small fraction of your works has been translated into the native language and the majority of people cannot read English. But an average Polish fan wouldn't be able to say much about Isaac Asimov as a person. What could you tell us about your life? IA: Well, I was born in the Soviet Union in 1920, came to the United States with my family in 1923 and lived in New York since. I got my Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1948. I'm married and have two children from my first marriage. I started reading Science-Fiction when I was nine years old. I sold my first story when I was eighteen and my first book when I was thirty. Since then I have published 394 books. I have twenty five other books in press. Some of these are mysteries, some are children' books, others are on straight science, literary subjects, humor, mythology - on everything I can think of.

Analysis of the Three Laws of Robotics
It all started a long time ago. In the 19 th century to be exact. For it was in the year 1818 that an artificial man was born in the world of literature. He was the creation of the mad scientist Frankenstein. As the story goes, the creation does not only become an artificial man, but also a monster. A monster that turns against his own creator, helping to create the impression upon society that "there are some things Man was not meant to know." This point of view would continue to exist until Asimov made his way into the spotlight. Fast-forward 121 years later and we arrive at a play called Rossum's Universal Robots. It was a landmark in science fiction history in 1921, for the word robot had been born. However, the robot in Rossum's story was no different from the character Frankenstein. It too turned on its creator only this time it was worse. The robots turned on all of humanity, not just his creator. For the next two-decades, many science fiction writers used such a plot, solidifying the idea that robots were monsters. The recycling of this plot is what inspired Asimov to create his own robot stories. Asimov, like many science fiction readers were simply bored reading essentially the same story over and over again.

Editoriale
