Amazon.com Although Jean Auel obviously takes certain liberties with the actions and motivations of all our ancestors, her extensive research into the Ice Age does shine throughespecially in the detailed knowledge of plants and natural remedies used by the medicine woman and passed down to Ayla. Mostly, though, this first in the series of four is a wonderful story of survival. Ayla's personal evolution is a compelling and relevant tale. Sara Nickerson Book Description A remarkable epic of one woman's odysseyfilled with mystery and magic.
Here is the saga of a people who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear; how they lived; the animals they hunted; the great totems they revered. But mostly it is the story of Ayla, the girl they found and raised, who was not like them. To the Clan, her fair looks make her differentugly. And she has odd ways: she laughs, she cries, she has the ability to speak. But even more, she struggles to be true to herself and, with her advanced intelligence, is curious about the world around her.

    Queen of Stone Age sex
By Deborah Ross June 10 2002 Jean Auel: "I'm able to go and do some things now. Ray and I can travel when we want to . . . But I don't have any desire for gold faucets." So, off to meet Jean Auel, pronounced "owl'', as in tawny, barn, snowy, just in case you need these things pressing home. Auel writes books. Her books are novels, and are called things like The Clan of the Cave Bear and The Mammoth Hunters , and they're all part of an ongoing prehistoric saga. Her heroine is Ayla, a Cro-Magnon woman. Her hero is Jondalar, a Cro-Magnon man. Ayla "seems to glow with a stunning beauty''. Jondalar has "unbelievably vivid blue eyes''. They throw a lot of spears, sharpen loads of flints, invent the needle and thread (what else is there to do when you don't have telly?) and, yes, have sex. The sex scenes are very much of the "his loins ached with need'' school. It's the sort of sex scene where you know it's not going to be long before "urgent'' and "manhood'' come into it.

pantazis5's Full Review: Auel, Jean M This is to be a four part opinion about the Earth Children Series.
There are four books in the series and each one has its own charm. Jean Auel wrote these books with the intention of having them be read separately and understood without having the need to read the other three. I believe that this means they each deserve their own opinion rather than all being grouped together.
The first book is THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR. This is the story of a little girl named Ayla. Ayla is a young girl adopted by cavemen. (the clan). Alya is not of the clan. She is one of the Others. The others are rungs above the clan in the ladder of evolution. The story takes place during the ice age. It is the era when the Clan are dying out and the others are evolving.

    Biography
American author of the continued story of a Cro-magnun heroin, first conceiving her character in 1977. The first three books were best-sellers, "Clan of the Cave Bear," 1980, "Valley of the Horses," 1982 and "The Mammoth Hunter," 1985. A film was made in 1986 of the first book. The books have been translated into some 15 languages. The series as a whole number six books to complete the story of Ayla, finishing in the caves of southern France. A tomboy as a kid, Auel had an active imagination. She always read profusely, and later became a member of Mensa. The daughter of a Chicago house painter, she married Ray Auel at 18, in 1954 , and had five kids by the time she was 25. She took an active roll in the two-income family, working her way from secretary to electronics technician to bank credit manager. In 1976 she completed her MBA. The following year she became obsessed with her research and writing of the cave-people, beginning her writing career at the age of 40. By the time her first two books exploded into the literary scene, holding the No. 1 spot on the best-seller lists for 18 weeks, she built a great house on the Oregon coast.
