This pamphlet places Augustus Caesar firmly in the context of his own times. It explores the background to his spectacular rise to power, his political and imperial reforms, the creation of the Respublica of Augustus, and the legacy he left to his successors. By examining the hopes and expectations of Augustus' contemporaries and his own personal characteristics of statesmanship and unscrupulous ambition, Shotter reveals that the reasons for Augustus' success lie partly in the complexity of the man himself, and partly in the unique nature of the times in which he lived. Z Augustus Caesar Biography Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus Augustus (23 September 63 BC - 19 August AD 14), known earlier in his life as Octavian, was the first Roman Emperor. Although he preserved the outward form of the Roman Republic, he ruled as an autocrat for more than 40 years. He ended a century of civil wars and gave Rome an era of peace, prosperity, and imperial greatness. He is generally known to historians by the title "Augustus" (revered one), which he acquired in 27 BC.
Augustus was born at Rome with the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus. His father, also Gaius Octavius, came from a respectable but undistinguished family of the equestrian order and was governor of Macedonia before his death in 58 BC. More importantly, his mother Atia was the niece of Rome's greatest soldier and de facto ruler, Julius Caesar. In 46 BC Caesar, who had no legitimate children, took his grand-nephew soldiering in Spain, and adopted him as his heir (see also adoption in Rome). He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus.
When Caesar was assassinated in March 44 BC, his young heir was with the army at Apollonia, in what is now Albania. He crossed over to Italy and recruited an army from among Caesar's veterans. At Rome, he found Caesar's republican assassins, Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, in control. After a tense standoff, he formed an uneasy alliance with Marcus Antonius and Marcus Lepidus, Caesar's principal colleagues. The three formed a junta called the Second Triumvirate, and launched a purge of those allied with the assassins.

Antony's son by Fulvia, and Caesarion, son of Caesar and Cleopatra, were killed and in 29 B.C., Octavian returned to Rome in triumph and proclaimed universal peace throughout the Roman world. Although Octavian claimed to represent the best of republican Rome, the fact remains that whatever remained of the Republic was a mere shadow. Octavian, now known as Augustus Caesar ("sacred leader"), held absolute power. After a number of victories, he suffered one defeat in 9 B.C. when the Roman army was annihilated by Germanic tribes under Arminius (18 B.C.-A.D. 19). Following this defeat, Augustus maintained a policy of domestic improvement and reform so sweeping that the the period of his rule and for almost two centuries after his death, was called the Augustan Age. Augustus died at Nola in A.D. 14 and was succeeded by his stepson, Tiberius (42 B.C.-A.D. 37) I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble. More Information

The statue of Augustus Caesar, Augustus of the Prima Porta Discussed extensively in Zanker's text (cited infra ), the statue exemplifies Augustus' shift towards a Greek-influenced portraiture. The man who would later become Augustus was born as Octavian from the gens Julia, an extremely ancient Roman family of patricians . The Julii were, despite their nobility, fairly unknown before Julius Caesar revived the fame of the clan, and were also fairly poor, despite their claim to direct descent from the goddess

Augustus (63 BC - AD 14)
A bronze head of Augustus   Augustus was the first emperor of Rome. He replaced the Roman republic with an effective monarchy and during his long reign brought peace and stability. Augustus was born Gaius Octavius on 23 September 63 BC in Rome. In 43 BC his great-uncle, Julius Caesar, was assassinated and in his will, Octavius, known as Octavian, was named as his heir. He fought to avenge Caesar and in 31 BC defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. He was now undisputed ruler of Rome. Instead of following Caesar's example and making himself dictator, Octavian in 27 BC founded the principate, a system of monarchy headed by an emperor holding power for life. His powers were hidden behind constitutional forms, and he took the name Augustus meaning 'lofty' or 'serene'. Nevertheless, he retained ultimate control of all aspects of the Roman state, with the army under his direct command.

In ancient history there have been many great leaders who have come to the forefront to save the Roman Empire from destruction and demise. The leaders and heroes of the Roman Empire are countless, but one leader stands out from all the rest. Augustus Caesar ’s contributions to Roman history helped make Rome the dominant empire we study and remember today. (Octavian) Augustus Caesar is without a doubt the greatest political leader in the history of the Roman Empire . As a young adolescent, Octavian demonstrated his leadership ability long before having thoughts of becoming the first emperor of Rome. Octavian’s strengths, feats, and accomplishments as a military leader show just a portion of his great political skills he pocessed. Augustus Caesar
Augustus Caesar , the founder of the Roman Empire , is one of the greatest pivotal figures in history. He ended the civil wars that had disrupted the Roman Republic during the first century B.C. and reorganized the Roman government so that internal peace and prosperity were maintained. Due to the fact that he was in office for almost half a century he succeeded in creating a new type of government.
23 September 63 B.C. marks the birth of Gaius Octavius (better known as Octavian). Octavian's father was one of the elite senators of Rome and his mother was Julius Caesar 's sister. At the age of four he lost his father, leaving him in the hands of his mother and uncle. Julius Caesar , who had no legitimate son of his own, liked Octavian, and helped prepare him for a political career. [Boardman, 121]
Under the foot steps of his great uncle, Julius Caesar , Octavian showed his prominence at an early age. Octavian served under Julius Caesar in the Spanish expedition. In 44 B.C. Octavian, 18 years old, was assigned as the senior military commander in the Parthian expedition. [Scarre, 17] While in Illyricum, the shocking news reached Octavian that Caesar's had been assassinated. In

Augustus Caesar
Augustus Caesar started a time in Rome called the Pax-Romania Era . He brought about a system of government in which he encouraged trade and glorified Rome by a splendid building program. He created denarius, a silver coin that we used which made trade between different parts of the empire much easier. Trade became faster when Augustus eliminated all taxed goods which created the Roman lands to form into one large economic empire. He also created faster transportation between cities by beginning a program of highway construction. Our emperors that served after he continued his work and by 100 AD there were 50,000 miles of major roads and more than 200,000 miles of secondary roads connecting each of the cities in the empire.
Augustus turned our city of Rome from a city of brick into a city of marble as he liked to say. A building material was discovered and was used to make roads and bridges. This building substance was concrete. We figured
