From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus , ( 62 BC - August 19, A.D. 14 ) was the first Roman Emperor . Before he became emperor, he is often referred to as Octavian in English speaking countries. He was accorded the name or title Augustus by the Senate of Rome in 27 BC , and as emperor is often referred to as Augustus Caesar ,Augustus Octavian , or simply Augustus .
Octavian's military right-hand-man was Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa , and his link with the important class of the Equites or 'Equestrian class' was Gaius Maecenas . Augustus's evident intention was to have Agrippa succeed him; he arranged for Agrippa to divorce his wife and marry Julia, Augustus's daughter from his first marriage. When Agrippa died unexpectedly in 12 BC , Augustus's plans were upset. Until their deaths, Agrippa's minor sons (who were also Augustus's grandsons) Gaius and Lucius remained his heirs. His succession by his stepson and adopted heir Tiberius created the so-called Julio-Claudian dynasty from their two nomina or family names.

Augustus, Caesar

Constructed 800 Miles of Roman Roads
by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003
Constantinople remained a prosperous city, populated by Romans, Greeks, Armenians, Syrians, Arabs, Asians and some Germans, all of them united by a common Roman citizenship and belief in Christ and the Trinity. Intermarriage among the different ethnicities was common, and by the 500s most people in Constantinople spoke Greek. A few spoke Latin, but Latin was declining and used chiefly on formal or official occasions. Prejudice was common only against those who could not speak Greek or who were not Catholic the essentials, according to some in Constantinople, for civilization. Germans made up the majority of those in Constantinople's army, and some soldiers were Huns. Many Germans labored on lands just outside the city, and some worked in Constantinople at menial jobs or as slaves in rich households.

The Achievements of Augustus Caesar
May it be my privilege to have the happiness of establishing the commonwealth on a firm and secure basis and thus enjoy the reward which I desire, but only if I may be called the author of the best possible government; and bear with me the hope when I die that the foundations which I have laid for its future government, will stand firm and stable. — Augustus Caesar Legend has it that Alexander the Great at thirty-two had sighed for fresh worlds to conquer. When Augustus learnt of this, he expressed his surprise “that Alexander did not regard the right ordering of the empire he had won a heavier task than winning it” . Unlike Alexander, Augustus took on the heavier task. from http://janusquirinus.org/ Augustus is arguably the most successful ruler ever and his was one of the greatest constructive successes in history. He “found his world, as it seemed, on the verge of complete collapse” . Rome had undergone almost a century worth of civil unrest: assassinations, riots, coups d’etat, and outright civil wars. “He evoked order out of chaos” , “peace was re-established and the madness of armed conflict was assuaged in every quarter” . Some called it a “peace of despotism” because in place of the Roman Republic , Augustus founded the Roman Empire . But even his enemies had to admit that civil war was worse than an illegal monarchy —“They preferred the safety of the present to the dangerous past” from http://janusquirinus.org/

What Was the Relationship Between Caesar and Augustus?
    By N.S. Gill , About.com Guide
    See More About:
Question: What Was the Relationship Between Caesar and Augustus? Augustus (aka Gaius Octavius or C. Julius Caesar Octavianus) became the first Roman emperor mainly because he had been adopted by Julius Caesar. Caesar is often referred to as Augustus' uncle. What was the exact relationship between Caesar and Augustus? Answer: Gaius Octavius (Augustus), born September 23, 63 B.C., was the son of Octavius, a praetor from Velitrae, and Atia, the daughter of Julius Caesar's sister Julia. When Caesar went to Spain to fight the Pompeians in 45 B.C., Gaius Octavius went with him. Caesar arranging the schedule in advance, named Gaius Octavius Master of the Horse for 43 or 42 B.C. Caesar died in 44 B.C. and in his will adopted Gaius Octavius. Octavius took the name C. Julius Caesar Octavianus at this point.
