    Jane Austen
Jane moved with her parents and Cassandra to Bath in 1801. Four years later, her father died. By 1807, she moved to Bargate, Southampton. In 1809, Mrs Austen, Cassandra, Jane and Martha Lloyd moved to Chawton, near Alton. Here they lived in the former bailiff' house on the Chawton estate that was left to Jane's brother Edward. It was Jane's final home, where she lived with her mother and sister Cassandra until 1817. At Chawton Jane led a quiet life and focused on novel writing. Jane revised both Sense and Sensibility that was published in 1811, as well as Pride and Prejudice, which was published in 1813. Pride and Prejudice was an instant success. All Jane's novels that appeared during her lifetime were published anonymously, merely bearing the legend "By a Lady". Mansfield Park was published in 1814 and Emma in 1815. Persuasion was published until 1818, after her death. In early 1817 Jane began to write Sanditon, but she became ill and the book was never completed. She died on 18 July at the age of 41.
    Famous quotations by Jane Austen:
  • It may be possible to do without dancing entirely. Instances have been known of young people passing many, many months successively without being at any ball of any description, and no material injury accrue either to body or mind; but when a beginning is madewhen the felicities of rapid motion have once been, though slightly, feltit must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) , English author wrote numerous influential works contributing to the Western literary canon including Pride and Prejudice (1813) which starts; “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.” —Chapter 1 Austen had rejected suitor Harris Bigg Wither at the last minute and never ended up marrying, but still she expresses a keen grasp of the traditional female role and the ensuing hopes and heartbreaks with her memorable protagonists including Emma Woodhouse, Fanny Price, Catherine Morland, Anne Elliot, and Elizabeth Bennett of Pride and Prejudice . Writing in the romantic vein, Austen was also a realist and has been lauded for her form and structure of plot and intensely detailed characters who struggle with the issues of class-consciousness versus individualism: self-respecting men were supposed to become lawyers or join the church or military, and respectable women married to improve their station in life.

We are a community of readers and writers of Jane Austen fan fiction with one of the oldest and largest archives of Jane Austen-based stories on the internet. Jane Austen (Dec 16, 1775 - July 18, 1817) is best known for her novels Pride and Prejudice Sense and Sensibility Emma , and Persuasion , and for her wit and social observations. We make no claims to be able to reach the literary heights of Miss Austen, but, because we all wish that she had lived longer and written more, we feel the need to expand on the world, the characters and the stories that Miss Austen created. Our archives include over 2,500 stories, and more stories are posted to our message board every day. We have a community message board at Jane Austen's Tea Room , where we discuss all things Austen and a great deal more, and we have a place to share our non-Jane-Austen-based creative writing: A Novel Idea . From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search A watercolour and pencil sketch of Jane Austen, believed to be drawn from life by her sister Cassandra [A] Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction set among the gentry earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature, her realism and biting social commentary cementing her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer. Her artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about 35 years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she tried then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth.
