edit Early years
Isaak Babel was born into a family of Manus and Feyga Bobel (Babel changed the spelling of his surname in his twenties) in Moldavanka , then an impoverished, largely industrial suburb of Odessa . Babel's family moved to the port city of Nikolayev soon after Babel's birth before returning to live in a more fashionable part of Odessa in 1905, but Babel used Moldavanka as the setting for The Odessa Tales and the play Sunset According to Babel's autobiographical statements, his father Manus was a shopkeeper, but, per Babel's daughter Nathalie, who edited the first complete collection of her father's work, Babel fabricated this and other details of his background in order to "present an appropriate past for a young Soviet writer who was not a member of the

Isaak Babel (1894-1941) - born on July 1; New Style: July 13, 1894 Short story writer and playwright who was a correspondent of the Red Army forces of Semyon Budyonny during the Russian civil war. Babel's fame is based on his stories of the Jews in Odessa and his novel Red Cavalry (1926). He was the first major Russian Jewish writer to write in Russian. "The music of its style contrasts with the almost ineffable brutality of certain scenes.
One of the stories - "Salt" - enjoys a glory seemingly reserved for poems, and rarely attained by prose: many people know it by heart."
(Jorge Luis Borges on Red Cavalry in Total Library Isaak Babel was born in the Jewish ghetto of Odessa, Ukraine. Most of his early years he spent in the Black Sea port Nikolaev, 90 miles away. The atmosphere of the persecution of Jews is reflected in the pessimism of his stories, although his childhood was relatively comfortable. At a time when most Jews were forbidden to live in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, and other localities, Odessa had many times more Jews than any other city in the Russian part of the empire. However, between 1881 and 1917 two million Jews left Russia, mostly for America. Babel's father was a successful businessman who installed his family in one of the best streets in Odessa. Babel studied violin, German, French, and Talmud at the Nicholas I Commercial Institute (1905-11) and wrote stories at the age of fifteen in imitation of Guy de Maupassant. In 1915 Babel graduated from Kiev University, which had been evacuated to Saratov on the Volga because of the war.

BABEL, ISAAC EMMANUILOVICH th century. At the same time Babel is a profoundly Jewish writer not only in his choice of settings and of subject matter, but also in a more profound sense. His imagination is nourished primarily by the tension between his Jewish ethos and the non-Jewish environment and by his inability to conquer within himself traces of residual Jewishness, particularly those of a moral character. Babel was not a prolific writer. His renown rests chiefly on two collections of short stories, Red Cavalry Konarmiya , 1926) and Odessa Tales (1927). Together with two plays, The Sunset (1928) and Maria (1935), several tales and a few film scripts, these constitute his entire literary legacy. A disciple of Flaubert and Maupassant, Babel excelled in the highly polished conte feasts and magnificent funeral processions are reminiscent of the lush canvases of a Breughel. Isaac Babel, the son of a Jewish shopkeeper, was born in Odessa, Ukraine, on 13th July,1894. When he was a child he witnessed a pogrom and was deeply influenced by the experience. After leaving school Babel moved to Kiev. He began writing but had no success with his work until he met Maxim Gorky in 1916. Soon afterwards Gorky printed two of his short stories in his Letopis . The Russian censors considered the stories to be obscene and Babel was charged under Article 1001 of the criminal code. Babel joined the Bolsheviks in 1917 and during the Civil War he served as a political commissar in the Red Army . A collection of his stories based on his war experiences, Red Cavalry was published in 1926. The following year he published Odessa Tales , a collection of stories about Jewish life in Russia. He also wrote two plays

Babel, Isaak Emmanuilovich
(b. July 13 [July 1, Old Style], 1894, Odessa, Ukraine, Russian Empired. March 17, 1941, Siberia, Russia, USSR), Soviet short-story writer noted for his war stories and Odessa tales. He was considered an innovator in the early Soviet period and enjoyed a brilliant reputation in the early 1930s. The "Odessa Tales" were published in collected book form in 1931. This cycle of realistic and humorous sketches of the Moldavankathe ghetto suburb of Odessavividly portrays the life-style and jargon of a group of Jewish bandits and gangsters, led by t heir "king," the legendary Benya Krik. Babel wrote other short stories, as well as two plays (Zakat, 1928; Mariya, 1935). In the early 1930s his literary reputation in the Soviet Union was high, but, in the atmosphere of increasing Stalinist cultural regimentation, Communist critics began to question whether his works were compatible with official literary doctrine. After the mid-1930s Babel lived in silence and obscurity. His last published work in the Soviet Union was a short tribute to Gorky in 1938. His powerful patron had died in 1936; in May 1939 he was arrested, and he died in a prison camp in Siberia. After Stalin's death in 1953, Babel was rehabilitated, and his stories were again published in the Soviet Union.

His stories, especially his treatment of the Cossacks in the war with Poland and his treatment of the Odessa underworld, were innovative for both their subject matter and their crisp, clean prose. Babel's treatment of war was unflinching and unromantic, in contrast to the romanticized attitudes found in earlier Russian treatments, such as Leo Tolstoy 's War and Peace . While Babel's narrator seemed to support the Bolshevik cause, his realistic treatment of actions of Marshall Budyonny's soldiers brought on the Marshall's ire, who was scandalized by Babel's "slander." Babel's art has much in common with Expressionism , with its striking images designed to provoke an emotional response from the reader.
