Powerful document of folklore and vicious warfare
Isaac
Babel does not fit neatly into any box. Some may say his writing reminds them of this or that author, but without reading him in his native Russian, I don't know. What I can say is that his stories do not conform to any assumptions I have about pre- and post-revolutionary Russia, or the experience of its Jewish population at the same time.
There are four sections here: Early Stories, The Odessa Stories, The Red Calvary Cycle, and Later Stories. Of these, the Early Stories are the weakest - but maybe only in comparison. Once Babel gets started on Odessa, the tempo quickens and the section hangs together like a novella written out of short stories. The challenging part is that his characters might as well have been from the moon for all the sense of kinship I had with them. At times these stories - filled with gangsters and charlatans and schemers and fighters - read almost like folklore. Earthy, passionate and brutal legends of a mixed community, which, perhaps due to its location and population, operated differently from my conception of mainstream Russian life of the time. When Babel hints at the destruction of this way of life in the wake of the revolution, I felt a genuine sense of something unique passing away.
Even though the Polish campaign ended in failure, this cycle of stories cemented Babel's fame, and when I compare the popularity of his gritty realism with the patriotic, almost naive "Sergeant York" style of war stories in America at the time, I am bewildered by the difference in attitude between cultures. The last section of stories turn autobiographical, and when describing the pogrom he experienced as a child and events soon after the revolution, Babel catalogs all of the inhuman cruelty he witnessed. Taken with the Red Cavalry Cycle, Babel can be at times plainly vicious - readers who prefer their stories sanitized would do well to look elsewhere.

Nationality: Russian
Categories: Journalist Playwrights
1894 - Isaac Babel was born 13th of July in Odessa, Russian Empire. 1904 - Studied the Bible and the Talmud intensively at home, and at school he was an outstanding student, writing stories in French. 1915-1917 - He left home for St. Petersburg, where he was befriended by the writer Maxim Gorky, who is a magazine editor published two of Babel's stories in 1916. 1917 - The Russian authorities labeled the stories subversive and indecent, and Babel would have been prosecuted but for the outbreak of the Russian Revolution. 1920 - Engaged in political, journalistic, and administrative activities for the Bolsheviks, he became a political commissar in a Cossack cavalry regiment fighting for the Bolsheviks in Poland. 1923-1926 - This experience was the basis of short stories he began to publish, which were collected in the volume Red Cavalry (1926) and established his success. They are stories of extreme brutality, violence, and cruelty, often told with grim, ironic humor. Babel's style is ornate, with colorful imagery and startling metaphors, while his technique of moral understatement emphasizes shock and moral impact. 1928-1934 - Babel lived in France. He found writing increasingly difficult in the oppressive environment of Soviet literature during the 1930's. Although recognized as a major author, he was viewed with suspicion by U.S.S.R. authorities and published little during this period.

She is a lovely person; maybe awkward at first, but she's hilarious once she gets going. The best part about this class: if you do the reading and nothing more, you'll be fine, but if you want to get a lot more out of it and participate actively in the discussions and really try to understand everything, you can do that too. I love classes that give you those two options."

Isaac Babel (1894-1941?)
commentary by Karen Bernardo Isaac Babel was born in the Russian city of Odessa. His father was a merchant, and sources differ about the familys economic status; but unquestionably Isaac deeply felt the persecution that came with being Jewish. He began to write as a teenager and met Maxim Gorky, another Russian writer, who published several of Babels stories in the periodical Letopis
However, Russian censors, unable to comprehend what Babel was trying to do, had Babel charged with obscenity. Babel seems to have concluded that the best solution to his sense of differentness was to abdicate the lifestyle of a Jewish intellectual altogether. This was also in response to Gorkys advice to get more life experience with commoners. He joined the Cossacks, an experience which provided the background for his short story collection Red Cavalry , which he would write several years later in his life.
But the life of a Cossack soldier was not for him. Babel had been raised on equal doses of Talmudic scholasticism and French literature, neither of which were compatible with the brutality he saw during his tenure as a supply officer in the Russian Army. He moved to Moscow in 1923 and began writing in earnest. He completed Red Cavalry , a book of short stories based on his youth entitled Odessa Tales , and several other short fiction collections as well as several plays and works for the cinema.
