Baker, Nicholson. Vox
  • A story of technologically assisted sexuality via the remediation of a phone line (through text)
  • Jim and Abby’s relationship depends on the distance enabled through the phone—the ability to assume another identity, to elaborate and obfuscate, to control and be controlled without any physical contact become cornerstones in the procession towards climax
  • A novel that in many ways, reflects and anticipates the growing World Wide Web in that it’s reliance on text—in orality/aurality and the actual text of the novel
Many critics comment that the dialogue is unrealistic and, in many ways, it is—the spontaneity of the conversations, the complexity of their fictional narratives (involving, among things, bent sliver forks, paint rollers and cityscapes in the FM dial) smack of contrivance, but only because we attribute to them the characteristics of orality and, by extension, the typical phone conversation; that these conversations take place on the plane of the page, unbroken by the insertion of narrative markers of time, space and traditional, oppositional conflict, render them multi-dimensional
Page>words>phone exist simultaneously Their connection is one built entirely on language, on words, on neologisms and metaphors; language is given an extended material presence, becoming, much like the language of the chatroom, an extension of the body

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Nicholson Baker in December 2007. Nicholson Baker (born January 7, 1957) is a contemporary American writer of fiction and non-fiction. As a novelist, he often focuses on minute inspection of his characters' and narrators' stream of consciousness , and has written about such provocative topics as voyeurism and planned assassination . His fiction generally de-emphasizes narrative in favor of careful description and characterization. Baker's enthusiasts appreciate his ability to candidly explore the human psyche, while critics have charged that his subject matter is trivial.

N Have you always been drawn to minutiae? Oh, yes. I have that problem. When I was working on perspective in art class, the drawings that I would do would be of the wall socket, but vast and worked out right from wall's eye view, and diminishing. And it is kind of hard to draw the little holes in the plug in perspective, if you're at a very rakish angle. I've always liked to inspect lichens at close range. I don't know what caused that cast of thought. At the same time, I would write in my notebooks about all these ambitions of writing enormous books, huge subjects for novels, but the only time I actually felt pleasure writing was when I had turned the lens a little bit and was focusing on something carefully and was able to revolve it in my mind. It's not automatic, I don't feel as if I'm a description machine cranking myself slowly in one direction, fixing on something, spitting out a description of it, and then moving on to the next thing. What it feels like is that, instead, I have some pressing point I want to make about the coils of a toaster. Next page: Of lumber and other obsessions

    THE EVERLASTING STORY OF NORY
    By Nicholson Baker
Dealing with childhood must be a great challenge for any writer. While childhood itself is a universal experience, from an adult perspective it is a foreign country. The Everlasting Story of Nory is an imaginative re-creation of this special world. It takes the form of a series of sketches in the life of Eleanor (Nory) Winslow, a nine-year-old American girl attending school in England. At home she cares for her parents and younger brother (Littleguy) while writing dramas about princesses and paupers. At school she meets new friends and campaigns for the acceptance of an unpopular classmate named Paula. In short, she is a perfect little girl. Too perfect? Well, it is her story, after all. Doubts about where Nicholson Baker's head was at after last year's neo-porn Vox are soon put to rest. The most impressive thing about this book is his skilful handling of Nory's voice. Although Baker uses the third person, he tailors the style to fit Nory's bubbly stream of thought. It is a delusion that anyone speaks in prose. A child's voice only makes this more obvious. Nory's language is closer to poetry - a rambling, rhythmical babble that emphasizes repetition, echo, and rhyme. In addition, the semi-literate nature of a child's language introduces punning and word-play into even the simplest observations. As Nory herself puts it, "if you think about a kid's language, it can mean about eighty million different things."

BAKER, Nicholson Double Fold NY, Random House, (2001). A review copy of Baker's controversial book, subtitled "Libraries and the Assault on Paper," which caused considerable stir when portions of it were published in The New Yorker and even more when the entire book was published. The book is a polemic arguing against the destruction of paper by libraries, which favor microfiching and digitization, and the author uses a number of astonishing examples to make his case. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. Inscribed by the author All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. Nicholson Baker - Biography
Nicholson Baker , born in New York City on January 7, 1957, is a Professor of Poetry at European Graduate School EGS and a celebrated writer of fiction and non-fiction. He studied briefly at the Eastman School of Music and received a B.A. in philosophy from Haverford College. He lives with his family in South Berwick, Maine. As a novelist, Baker's work focuses on the thoughts of characters during otherwise inconsequential moments. His novels generally de-emphasize narrative and focus instead on careful description and characterization. Nicholson Baker is also an activist for the protection and archiving of newspapers. His campaign arose after he discovered that many major libraries destroy the paper originals once a microfilm copy has been made. In 1997, Baker received the San Francisco–based James Madison Freedom of Information Award in recognition of these efforts. In 1999, he established a non-profit corporation, the American Newspaper Repository, to rescue old newspapers from destruction by libraries. These discoveries prompted Baker to write Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper , a book that has received a great deal of media attention and for which he also received a National Book Critics Circle Award in 2001.
