Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z J. G. Ballard Biography James Graham Ballard (born November 18, 1930 in Shanghai) is a British novelist. Ballard, at eleven years old, lived through the Japanese takeover of China. He was separated from his family and moved to a civilian detention camp. These experiences were described in the semi-autobiographical Empire of the Sun (which was adapted for film). After the war's end, he was reunited with his family and returned to England. Ballard wrote about these events in his novel The Kindness of Women.
Those who know Ballard from his autobiographical novels will not be prepared for the subject matter that Ballard most commonly pursues, as his most common genre is science fiction dystopia. His most celebrated early novel is Crash, wherein cars stand-in metaphorically for the automation of the world and where city life itself is programmed to death dragging its inhabitants (the protagonist named after the author included) into a macabre lust. Ballard's disturbing novel was turned into a controversial, and also disturbing, film by David Cronenberg.
Ballard's fiction is literary, sophisticated, and profoundly concerned with creating cognitive and aesthetic dissonance in its readers. Because of his tendency to upset readers to enlighten them, Ballard does not enjoy a strong mass market following, but he is recognized by critics as one of the U.K.'s most prominent writers.

JG BALLARD: PROFILE
Monday 6 October 2003 11pm-11.40am; rpt Thursday 9 Oct midnight-12.40am The novels Empire of the Sun and Crash have brought him mainstream success and controversy in equal measure, but JG Ballard remains one of our most inventive and adventurous writers. One of his own characters once said, "I've always thought of life as a kind of disaster area" and Ballard constantly presents his disquieting, often apocalyptic, vision of a world that remains, for him, "the only alien planet". Shanghai to Shepperton Born and brought up in colonial Shanghai comfort, young James Graham Ballard saw his life change forever when, in the aftermath of Pearl Harbour, Japanese forces swept into the city. The three years he spent in an internment camp moulded his view of "a world turned up-side down" and have constantly influenced his fiction. Back in Britain, he abandoned his medical studies at Cambridge to become a full-time writer, and his first novel, The Drowned World, was published in 1962. As with many of his works, the wanderings of his characters' minds are charted as minutely as the external world they inhabit. The Drought, The Wind from Nowhere and The Crystal World all strengthened his reputation for bleak but beautiful chronicles of a post-Hiroshima age.

    About Our Family Research
I am researching the James Mayfield Ballard family. He was born in Alabama in 1849. He was first married to Susan Francis Simms and then to Nancy Lorrinda Lee Young. She was first married to John Bunyon Ivie. James was found married to Nancy in 1900 in Indepence Co., Ark. He may have been an herb doctor. His father George W. Ballard left for the war when James was 12 and he was never heard from again. Found on 1870 Butler Co, Missouri census living with Nancy Ballard. Siblings: Caleb, Thomas, Jimima, Betty and George W. Most of the family lives in Mo and Ark , although some migrated to Tx, Cal and Ok. Other families tied to this tree are Ivie, Young, Mires, Roberts, Crawford, Koeller, Alexander, Brewington, Hensley, etc...
I am also researching the John Paul Miller family. They came from Dunningen, Germany near Rottweil. They settled in Hokah, Mn. Other members of this tree are Cook and Fogel.
I am interested in obtaining and sharing info on the families and more.
