THE first thing that strikes you about Iain Banks is how likeable he is. Anyone who has read his books will know the twisted, painful deaths awaiting many characters, particularly the heroes, whom you cheer on to the last page only for some twist to befall them. It's a fact that he shrugs off with his booming infectious laugh, which peppers conversations. "HAHAHAHAHA yeah, they have a pretty tough time of it, especially in the science-fiction novels, but there's the occasional sort of happy ending," he points out, proudly. "Normally, happy endings are really schmaltzy. Everybody else is doing that and if you watch a standard Hollywood movie you get that. There are far too many schmaltzy endings and it's been far too well covered already; I wouldn't want to do it." Iain Banks burst on to the literary scene in 1984 with The Wasp Factory, the tale of a boy who discovers that he is a woman. Since then, he has notched up a number of successes, including The Crow Road, The Bridge and Complicity, and he writes under the name Iain M. Banks for science-fiction titles, including Consider Phlebas, Excession, and Inversions, just out in paperback. At first dubbed the Scottish Bard of Depravity, a title he says he has passed on to Irvine Welsh, he now has an air of respectability about him, but still finds painful deaths for his characters. And he readily admits that he enjoys it.

Iain Banks : Whit and Excession: Getting Used To Being God
Chris Mitchell meets the relentlessly imaginative Iain.M Banks Twelve years and fourteen books since the publication of his debut novel The Wasp Factory, Iain Banks has become one of Britain's most prominent and prolific writers. Whether writing mainstream novels as plain "Iain Banks" or science fiction under his ubiquitous "Iain M. Banks" nom-de-plume, Banks has mastered the tricky art of attracting both bestseller status and critical acclaim. Now 42, Banks' most recent books, the sci-fi epic Excession and the religious cult thriller Whit, indicate that his ceaselessly inventive imagination is in no danger of slowing down. Banks is first and foremost a brilliant storyteller. He takes evident joy in being able to push his plotlines as far as they can go, sending the reader at breakneck speed through unexpected plot twists, cliffhanger endings and, in his sci-fi, mindbending technological possibilities. As he says, "You're very spoilt as a novelist. You get used to being God, basically. No-one tells you what to do." Yet amongst the sex, death, drink and illegal substances that peppers Banks' writing, there lurks a distinct moral probity.

Description
It begins in the realm of the Real, where matter still matters. It begins with a murder. And it will not end until the Culture has gone to war with death itself. Lededje Y'breq is one of the Intagliated, her marked body bearing witness to a family shame, her life belonging to a man whose lust for power is without limit. Prepared to risk everything for her freedom, her release, when it comes, is at a price, and to put things right she will need the help of the Culture. Benevolent, enlightened and almost infinitely resourceful though it may be, the Culture can only do so much for any individual. With the assistance of one of its most powerful - and arguably deranged - warships, Lededje finds herself heading into a combat zone not even sure which side the Culture is really on. A war - brutal, far-reaching - is already raging within the digital realms that store the souls of the dead, and it's about to erupt into reality. It started in the realm of the Real and that is where it will end. It will touch countless lives and affect entire civilizations, but at the center of it all is a young woman whose need for revenge masks another motive altogether.

Book Review
Iain Banks is a multi-generic, multi-task dream. On one hand, he's produced a series of science fiction novels (Feersum Endjinn, Inversions) that have achieved cult status in his native Britain. On the other hand, he has dipped into the world of contemporary fiction with a number of equally successful works (The Bridge, Complicity). Fans of both rely on Banks's acidic wit, elegantly clever prose, and sometimes befuddling but always fascinating plot twists. The Business, a sly satire of corporate success, begins with every promise of fulfilling those standards. Kathryn Telman, "a senior executive officer, third level (counting from the top) in a commercial organization which has had many different names through the ages but which, these days, we usually just refer to as the Business," has been selected to negotiate the... Book Review "I had been making the rounds of the Sacrifice Poles the day we heard my brother had escaped. I already knew something was going to happen; the Factory told me." Those lines begin one of the most infamous of contemporary Scottish novels. The narrator, Frank Cauldhame, is a weird teenager who lives on a tiny island connected to mainland Scotland by a bridge. He maintains grisly Sacrifice Poles to serve as his early warning system and deterrent against anyone who might invade his territory.

Consider Phlebas (new UK cover)
Illustrator Mark Salwowski.
Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks was first published in 1987. The following is a description of the Vavatch Orbital (a mini-ringworld) taken from the book: "Vavatch lay in space like a god's bracelet. The fourteen-million kilometre hoop glittered and sparkled, blue and gold against the jet black gulf of space beyond. As the Clear Air Turbulence warped in towards the Orbital, most of the Company watched their goal approach on the main screen in the mess. The aquamarine sea, which covered most of the surface of the artefact's ultradense base material, was spattered with white puffs of cloud, collected in huge storm systems or vast banks, some of which seemed to stretch right across the full thirty-five-thousand-kilometre breadth of the slowly turning Orbital. Only on one side of that looped band of water was there any land visible, hard up against one sloped retaining wall of pure crystal. Although, from the distance they were watching, the sliver of land looked like a tiny brown thread lying on the edge of a great rolled-out bolt of vivid blue, that thread was anything up to two thousand kilometres across; there was no shortage of land on Vavatch."
In a later section of the book there is the following line: "They were still flying over the Circlesea towards land when the Culture blew the whole Orbital into a fourteen-million-kilometre halo of light and dust..."

What are The Culture novels? The Scottish author Iain M. Banks has created a highly advanced space faring society called The Culture. In it phenomenally intelligent machines called 'Minds' run a civilization that many would consider as utopia or as close as you can get to it. Banks realized that a science fiction book set in utopia would be very dull and so he created 'Contact' the branch of The Culture that handles the dealing with, and meeting of, other civilizations. The plots of his Culture books all revolve around Contact and its espionage division called 'Special Circumstances'.
