Mutant Anxiety: On Reading Barthelme’s Narrator in "Me and Miss Mandible."
This attitude is neatly defined by Terry Eagleton as "fighting the text": The reader, it would seem, is engaged in fighting the text as much as interpreting it, struggling to pin down its anarchic ‘polysemantic’ potential within some manageable framework(81). Destabilization takes place once we accept the indeterminancy of the narrator: something we have already conceded to. Adjustments, to the "fantastic," to the narrator as "mutation," to the absence of narrative flow, are made subsequently. Stabilization occurs when we choose to view the text as what might be called a meaning commodity, or fictive parcel. Such a view highlights the cultural relationship between text and reader, product and consumer, and illustrates the workings of a program of exchange present both inside and outside the story. By program of exhange we mean a ritual wherein characters, namely the narrator, Miss Mandible, Sue Ann, and Bobby Vanderbilt, actively construct their identities, their narrative "roles" from extisting texts, from selected cultural sign-systems, by reading and reproducing in their actions and attitudes a network of values readily pre-packaged for consumption. As texts/signs ( Road and Track, Movie-Tv Secrets

A wonderful romp This novelalthough it really shouldn't be called thatis a wonderfully fragmented romp in the mud that is our bloated western culture. Don't go into this expecting an emotionally compelling narrative. While there are characters who do things, I'd hardly describe their actions as "plot," at least in the conventional sense. Moreover, though, I found my attachment to What Happened being continually, purposefully undercut. The moment-to-moment thrill, however, is unmistakable. These were some of the most enjoyable passages (if cynically so) I've encountered in awhile. If you're in the mood for an assertive tour-de-force (which actually does NOT go on for too long at allprecisely because things ARE happening!...plus the book is pretty short, not to mention a quick read), try this one out!

[Login to edit this page] Some soft contact lenses are tinted a faint blue to make them more visible when immersed in cleaning and storage solutions. Some cosmetic lenses are deliberately colored to alter the appearance of the eye. Some lenses now have a UV protection surface treatment to reduce UV damage to the eye's natural lens. It has been estimated that 125 million people use contact lenses worldwide (2%), including 28 to 38 million in the United States and 13 million in Japan. The types of lenses used and prescribed vary markedly between countries, with rigid lenses accounting for over 20% of currently-prescribed lenses in Japan, the Netherlands and Germany but less than 5% in Scandinavia. People choose to wear contact lenses for many reasons, often due to their appearance and practicality. When compared with spectacles, contact lenses are less affected by wet weather, do not steam up, and provide a wider field of vision. They are more suitable for a number of sporting activities. Additionally, ophthalmological conditions such as keratoconus and aniseikonia may not be accurately corrected with glasses. Leonardo Da Vinci is frequently credited with introducing the idea of contact lenses in his 1508 Codex of the eye, Manual D, where he described a method of directly altering corneal power by submerging the eye in a bowl of water. Leonardo, however, did not suggest his idea be used for correcting vision—he was more interested in learning about the mechanisms of accommodation of the eye.

Q: The same thing?
A: The same sort of thing.
Q: Is the bicycle dead?
From "The Explanation" "Writing is a process of dealing with not-knowing, a forcing of what and how.... The not-knowing is crucial to art, is what permits art to be made. Without the scanning process engendered by not-knowing, without the possibility of having the mind move in unanticipated directions, there would be no invention.... The not-knowing is not simple, because it's hedged about with prohibitions, roads that may not be taken. The more serious the artist, the more problems he takes into account and the more considerations limit his possible initiatives."
From the essay "Not-Knowing" Introduction "Play is one of the great possibilities of art; it is also ... the Eros-principle whose repression means total calamity. The humorless practitioners of le noveau roman produce such calamities regularly, as do our native worshippers of the sovereign Fact. It is the result of a lack of seriousness."

Book Review
This excellent collection of Donald Barthelme's literary output during the 1960s and 1970s covers the period when the writer came to prominenceproducing the stories, satires, parodies, and other formal experiments that altered fiction as we know itand wrote many of the most beautiful sentences in the English language. Due to the unfortunate discontinuance of many of Barthelme's titles, 60 Stories now stands as one of the broadest overviews of his work, containing selections from eight previously published books, as well as a number of other short works that had been otherwise uncollected. This text refers to the Paperback edition.
